The Georgia High School Association approved a proposal Tuesday to phase in the use of a 30-second shot clock for all varsity boys and girls basketball games, becoming the ninth state to bring the game into alignment with the college and professional level in that regard.
Georgia joins California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Washington as the only states to use a 30- or 35-second shot clock.
According to the initial proposal, the 2020-21 season would feature shot clocks only in approved holiday tournaments and showcase games and wouldn't be used in region games or postseason competition.
In 2021-22, the shot clock would be used in approved tournaments and showcases as well as region play, if approved by region.
The clock would be used in all varsity games including state playoffs in 2022-23.
Last month, the National Federation of State High School Associations voted down a proposal to implement a shot clock in every state starting in 2020-21.
