The Cleveland Indians announced Wednesday that the team had re-claimed first baseman/outfielder Russ Canzler off waivers from the Blue Jays and designated right-handed pitcher Jeanmar Gomez for assignment.
The Indians previously designated Canzler for assignment in mid-December, with the Blue Jays claiming him off waivers Dec. 21.
Canzler, 26, hit .269/.299/.398 in 97 plate appearances with the Indians in 2012. His prior major-league experience amounted to five plate appearances with the Rays the previous season.
However, Canzler has been a productive hitter in the high levels of the minors, hitting .276/.362/.500 with 27 home runs in 678 plate appearances in Double-A and .289/.365/.508 with 40 home runs in 1,088 plate appearances in Triple-A.
Gomez, who turns 25 in February, went 5-8 with a 5.96 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 47 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings for the Indians in 2012.
