Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation, the club announced. As a corresponding move, reliever Ryan Mattheus has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.

Gonzalez, 28, is 3-4 with a 4.62 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 53 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings this season. He was off to a very good start, but has coughed up 12 earned runs in 7 1/3 innings in his last two outings, so it's clear his shoulder woes have had a hand in that.

Gonzalez's turn in the rotation doesn't come up until Thursday. His replacement will likely be either Taylor Jordan or Blake Treinen.
