Wednesday night, the St. Paul Saints of the independent American Association had a chance to clinch a postseason berth with a win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Alas, Winnipeg prevailed by the score of 3-2.
The Saints held a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning when right fielder Breland Almadova and catcher Vinny DiFazio teamed up for an incredible play at the plate. Almadova unleashed a rocket throw, and DiFazio was able to make the tag on the foot of the leaping Wes Darvill. Check it out:
You do not run on Breland Almadova! Almadova, a former Diamondbacks prospect, now has 12 outfield assists in 82 games with St. Paul this season.
Unfortunately for Almadova and the Saints, the Goldeyes took the lead in the ninth inning and won the game. St. Paul still has a three-game lead in the division and their magic number is one with five games to play. Clinching a playoff spot seems like a formality.
