Knicks vs. Pacers score, takeaways: Three things we learned as Jalen Brunson's return sparks Game 2 win

The New York Knicks have a 2-0 series lead against the Indiana Pacers after yet another thrilling playoff game at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks won Wednesday's Game 2, 130-121, in a matchup that saw their star player miss more than a quarter with an injury. Jalen Brunson missed the final 15 minutes of the first half with a sore right foot, but he returned at the start of the third quarter and helped spark a rally that put the Knicks ahead.

Brunson ended with 29 points, and 24 of them came after he returned from the injury. His floater with 41.7 seconds left served as a knockout blow to the Pacers. The Knicks were outscored by 17 points as he spent the end of the first quarter and the entire second quarter in the locker room. But New York won the third quarter, 36-18, and hung on for the victory in another nail-biting fourth quarter.

OG Anunoby had 28 points for the Knicks, but he left the game in the third quarter with a hamstring injury and did not return. Donte DiVincenzo added 28 points and hit half of his 12 3-point attempts.

The Pacers led by 10 points at halftime, but struggled in the third quarter. Tyrese Haliburton was much more assertive after scoring just six points in Game 1, though it wasn't enough in the end. He had 34 points, but 22 of them came in the first half and he scored just two points in the third quarter.

Here are three takeaways from Wednesday night's wild game.

1. Jalen pulled a Willis

It didn't quite summon all the drama of the original, but Brunson's return in the second half on Wednesday night mirrored one of the most iconic moments in Knicks history: When Willis Reed emerged from the locker room on a bad leg to help lead the Knicks to their first championship in 1970. Coincidentally, Wednesday was also the 54th anniversary -- to the day -- of Reed's heroics. Eerie stuff.

As for Brunson, we're getting spoiled by what he's been able to do during these playoffs, as he ran roughshod over the Pacers after his return, scoring 24 of his 29 points in the second half. He was simply unstoppable getting to his spots no matter which defender Indiana threw at him.

When the Pacers trapped Brunson to force the ball out of his hands, he didn't force the issue, instead making the simple pass and allowing his supporting cast to play four-on-three behind him.

Brunson has been phenomenal for the Knicks all season long, and Game 2 only added to his growing legend.

2. The Knicks have more injury concerns

Brunson was able to gut it out to finish Game 2, but we'll have to see how his injured foot responds ahead of Friday's Game 3 in Indiana. The Pacers outscored the Knicks by 17 points when Brunson was out, in keeping with the trend we've seen all postseason. The Knicks need their leader at somewhere close to full strength to function effectively, and foot injuries can sometimes be tricky.

Anunoby's issue seems more concerning, at least for now. Hamstrings are notoriously difficult injuries that tend to recur if not given adequate rest. With just one day off before Game 3, it's going to take some significant treatment and improvement for Anunoby to be able to play.

If he's sidelined, that would mean the Knicks would be without three of their major frontcourt pieces (Anunoby, Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson) as they attempt to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series. Tom Thibodeau is known for trimming his playoff rotation to the bare minimum, but someone -- Miles McBride, Precious Achiuwa, maybe even Alec Burks -- is going to get significant run if Brunson and/or Anunoby are out or hindered.

3. Haliburton fades again

After putting up just six points on four shots in Game 1, Haliburton clearly came out on a mission to look for his own offense in Game 2. The spindly guard logged 22 points on 7-for-12 shooting in the first half as the Pacers built a 10-point lead.

The second half was a different story, however, as he scored just two points on two shots in the third quarter while the Knicks mounted their swift comeback. He had a decent fourth quarter, scoring 10 points on five shots, but he definitely looked to be in pass-first mode much of the time -- which the Knicks anticipated and ate up.

If the Pacers are going to come back in this series, they're going to need the Haliburton from the first half for the entire time he's out there. It's not fair to ask him to score 40-plus every night -- that's just not in his arsenal right now -- but putting pressure on the defense as a scorer opens up everything else for his team.

FINAL - Knicks 130, Pacers 121

(New York leads series, 2-0)

In an absolutely wild game, the Knicks outlasted the Pacers despite significant injuries to both Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby to take a 2-0 lead in the series. New York trailed by 10 at halftime, but Brunson's return from a foot injury that caused him to miss the entire second quarter led to an all-out Knicks assault in the third. Anunoby then suffered a hamstring injury that caused him to be ruled out for the rest of the game, but Brunson and Co. did their thing in the fourth to bring the Knicks home.

The Knicks had three players score 25 or more points in a playoff game (Brunson, Anunoby and DiVincenzo) for the first time since 1970.

The Pacers simply couldn't get stops in the second half. They tried trapping Brunson at times, but that led to wide-open shots for the Knicks' supporting cast. On the other end, Tyrese Haliburton was held to nine points in the second half after dropping 22 in the first. The Pacers have their work cut out for them in Game 3 back in Indiana, but we'll all be monitoring the Knicks' injury situation.

Notable stats:

  • Jalen Brunson: 29 pts (24 in second half), 5 ast, 3 stl, 11-18 FG
  • OG Anunoby: 28 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast
  • Josh Hart: 19 pts, 15 reb, 7 ast, 5 TO
  • Donte DiVincenzo: 28 pts, 6 reb, 4 ast
  • Tyrese Haliburton: 34 pts, 9 ast, 6 reb, 7-11 3P
  • Obi Toppin: 20 pts, 3 reb, 7-10 FG

O-Boards killing Pacers

The Knicks have punished many teams this season by dominating the glass, and they're doing it once again late in Game 2. They have 11 offensive rebounds on the night that have led to 15 second-chance points. It's been even more evident in the fourth quarter, as an offensive board by Donte DiVincenzo just led to a Precious Achiuwa dunk that put New York up by seven points.

Anunoby out for Game 2

After heading to the locker room in the third quarter following a layup attempt, OG Anunoby has been ruled out for the rest of the game with a hamstring injury. He was having one of the better playoff games of his career, with 28 points, and the Knicks are really going to have to work to find offense with him out of the game and Jalen Brunson banged up with a sore foot.

End of 3rd quarter - Knicks 99, Pacers, 91

A 36-18 third quarter has given the Knicks control in this one, reversing a 10-point halftime deficit in short order. Jalen Brunson has returned to the game, scoring 10 of his 15 points in the third quarter, while Donte DiVincenzo is now up to 20 points after a strong frame. We'll have to monitor OG Anunoby, who went to the locker room in the third quarter with an apparent leg issue.

Notable stats:

  • Tyrese Haliburton: 24 pts, 7 ast, 6 reb, 5-8 3P
  • Obi Toppin: 20 pts, 2 stl, 7-10 FG
  • OG Anunoby: 28 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast
  • Josh Hart: 16 pts, 13 reb, 5 ast, 5 TO
  • Jalen Brunson: 15 pts, 4 ast, 3 stl, 6-8 FG

Anunoby limps to locker room

OG Anunoby grabbed the back of his left leg as he attempted a layup and quickly limped off the court and into the locker room. With Jalen Brunson already banged up, Anunoby was providing much of the New York offense. Now they're down yet another offensive threat, for the time being at least.

Pacers can't find answers

The crowd at MSG is absolutely rocking and the Knicks are on a 20-4 run. The Pacers are having trouble getting anything going offensively and are getting out-hustled and out-executed on the other end of the floor. After putting up 22 first-half points, Tyrese Haliburton has yet to score or even attempt a shot in the third quarter. Indiana is minus-10 in his 22 minutes thus far.

Knicks get boost

Jalen Brunson looks uncomfortable and certainly isn't 100%, but his mere presence has given some energy to the Knicks to start the third quarter. Donte DiVincenzo hit a couple of 3s and had a massive dunk in the lane, as New York has shaved five points off of the halftime deficit in just over three minutes.

Halftime - Pacers 73, Knicks 63

It's a story of point guards in the first half of Game 2 at Madison Square Garden. On the Knicks side, all eyes are on Jalen Brunson, who wet to the locker room in the first quarter and is questionable to return with what the team is calling a sore right foot. The Pacers have outscored New York 56-39 since Brunson left the game.

For the Pacers, Tyrese Haliburton clearly got the memo that he needs to be more aggressive after scoring just six points in Game 1, going off for 22 points, five assists and four rebounds in the first half on Wednesday night. We'll see how the Knicks adjust their defense in the second half to deal with a more score-first approach from the Pacers point guard.

Notable stats:

  • Tyrese Haliburton: 22 pts, 5 ast, 4 reb, 5-8 3P
  • Obi Toppin: 13 pts, 2 stl
  • OG Anunoby: 22 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast
  • Josh Hart: 10 pts, 8 reb, 3 ast, 5 TO
  • Jalen Brunson: 5 pts, 2-2 FG in 8 min

Brunson questionable to return

Jalen Brunson apparently suffered an injury to his right foot during the first quarter on Game 2 and is questionable to return. That obviously changes everything for the Knicks offense. The Knicks were plus-seven in Brunson's eight minutes tonight, and have been outscored by 17 points without him. With Brunson out, the playmaking responsibility falls onto the shoulders of Josh Hart, Donte DiVincenzo and OG Anunoby, while Miles McBride will likely get more minutes off the bench.

Anunoby has been brilliant in the first half, scoring 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting, and they'll need him to remain aggressive for as long as Brunson is out. If Brunson doesn't return, it will be interesting to see who the Knicks go to in crunch time with their go-to guy unable to play.

Still no Brunson

Jalen Brunson went to the locker room during the first quarter and has not returned since. He's averaged more than 40 minutes in the playoffs so this is a time when he would normally be in the game. No update yet from the Knicks or the broadcast.

End of 1st quarter - Knicks 36, Pacers 36

It was all New York early, but the Pacers put up an 11-0 run in the blink of an eye (less than a minute) to get right back into the game. The story for Indiana so far has been Tyrese Haliburton, who came out much more aggressive after scoring just six points in Game 1, looking for his own shot early. OG Anunoby was the standout performer in the opening frame for the Knicks, scoring both at the rim and from behind the arc.

Notable stats:

  • Tyrese Haliburton: 13 pts, 4 reb, 1 ast
  • Obi Toppin: 10 pts, 2 stl
  • OG Anunoby: 12 pts, 3 reb, 1 ast
  • Josh Hart: 6 pts, 4 TO
  • Jalen Brunson: 5 pts, 2-2 FG

Knicks offense clicking

This is exactly how the Knicks want to play offensively ... penetration and ball movement leading to wide-open looks and drives. The Knicks are 10 of 14 from the field and 3 for 5 from 3-point range, leading to an early double-digit advantage with Jalen Brunson sitting at just five points.

Meanwhile the Pacers only have one assist on five field goals -- the opposite of their winning formula.

Haliburton aggressive early

Tyrese Haliburton has already taken half as many shots as he did in Game 1, and he mentioned that he needs to look to score more in this series moving forward. His default setting is to facilitate, but the Knicks are so good at rotating and recovering to shooters that Haliburton's kickouts don't always lead to the same open shots that they usually do. When he penetrates, he needs to look to score first to keep the defense honest.

Spike Lee has a gift for Reggie Miller

Reggie Miller is back at Madison Square Garden tonight, calling the Knicks-Pacers game for TNT. He's prepared to hear some boos. We're not sure if he was prepared to receive gifts, which he did from Spike Lee ahead of tip-off.

Brunson finishes fifth in MVP voting

The 2024 NBA MVP award was handed out Wednesday night. Nikola Jokic was the winner (more on that here), but the Knicks catalyst finished in the top five. Brunson was No. 5 in MVP voting behind Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Knicks guard, who has scored 40+ points in four straight playoff games, got three second-place votes.

Here are the full voting results:
