Storylines

Utah Royals FC: The Royals dropped their first Fall Series match to Portland, 3-0. But they appear to be turning a corner on the pitch despite lots of attention off of it in light of internal investigations among ownership and coaching staff surrounding racist and sexist comments. The team is coming off a thrilling 2-2 draw to OL Reign. The goals came from midfielder Aminata Diallo and rookie forward Tziarra King, two players who could have bigger roles in this match against Portland. Diallo, Vero Boquete, and Lo'eau Labonta will have a big task in the middle against the talented Thorns midfield.

Portland Thorns FC: Thorns are coming off a high-scoring 4-1 victory over their rivals OL Reign, which saw Canadian veteran Christine Sinclair score a hat-trick and Costa Rican international Raquel Rodriguez score her first goal as a member of the Thorns. Portland is the only team to have two wins and remain unbeaten in the Fall Series. The team will likely continue to see success through the midfield with strong play from Angela Salem, Lindsey Horan and Rodriguez. The attack is currently led by second-year forward Simone Charley, who has been impressive in the last two matches, recording a goal and an assist.

Prediction

The Thorns are now clicking after navigating a difficult Challenge Cup, and each of their lines have strengths. Look for their winning ways to continue against Utah. Pick: Portland Thorns FC 3, Utah Royals FC 1
