Chase Kalisz only had to worry about one individual event at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and he made the most of it.

In a time of 4:06.75, Kalisz took home the silver medal in the 400m individual medley, an event in which the Americans had won five straight Olympic gold medals.

Japan's Kosuke Hagino finished in first place, while fellow countryman Daiya Seto finished in third.

The 22-year-old finished with the best time in preliminaries early on Saturday, but came up just short in the final. Michael Phelps is the world record holder in the event, but decided not to compete in the race at trials.

Kalisz outlasted 2012 gold medalist Ryan Lochte in the event at the U.S. Olympic trials to earn a spot in Rio.
