Almost seven years after the International Olympic Committee selected the city of Beijing as the site of the 2022 Winter Olympics, the Beijing Games officially begin this week. More than 2,300 athletes from 91 countries are set to compete, including 224 from the United States. Team USA will attempt to reverse the United States' steady decline in medals at the Winter Olympics. After winning a nation's-best 37 medals in 2010, the Americans won just 28 in 2014 in Sochi and 23 in 2018 in PyeongChang.

This year, the Over-Under for total medals won by Team USA is 22.5 in the latest 2022 Winter Olympics odds. Before locking in any Beijing 2022 picks or predictions, you need to see what SportsLine's Olympics expert, Mike Tierney, has to say.

A national sportswriter whose work appears in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, Tierney has covered nine Olympic Games in person. For Rio in 2016, Tierney profited big-time. He told readers to bet the Over on Team USA's gold medal count (41.5) and Over on Team USA's overall medal count (102.5). The result? 46 golds, 121 medals and two easy cashes.

For the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Tierney hit two of his three predictions: Germany (+200) to win the most gold medals and the United States winning Under 10.5 gold medals (+110). And at last year's Tokyo Games, he correctly predicted the United States would go Over 111.5 total medals (-110).

Now, with the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 starting, Tierney has analyzed every sport and come up with a confident pick on the U.S. medal count total. He has identified several factors as to why this wager will cash. You can visit SportsLine now to see all of his Beijing 2022 picks and Winter Olympic predictions.

Beijing Winter Olympics preview

Perhaps no American has a better chance of winning multiple medals than Mikaela Shiffrin. One of the winningest alpine skiers in history, Shiffrin made her Olympic debut in Sochi in 2014, winning gold in the slalom. Four years later in PyeongChang, she won gold in the giant slalom and took silver in the combined.

In 2020 her father Jeff died unexpectedly, which forced her off the circuit temporarily. But the 26-year-old Shiffrin enters the Beijing Winter Olympics in solid form, leading the World Cup standings. She is scheduled to compete in all five individual events in Beijing.

Another American with a chance to earn multiple medals is 17-year-old speedskater Jordan Stolz from Kewaskum, Wis. The youngest male member of Team USA (he won't turn 18 until May 21), Stolz has ascended rapidly over the last few months. The junior world record-holder in the 1000 meters, Stolz earned his first World Cup medal, a silver, in the 1000 in Calgary in December.

One month later at the U.S. Olympic Trials, he won both the 500 meters and 1000 meters, breaking the track record in both. Widely regarded as the future of American speedskating, Stolz will race in both the 500 and 1000 at Beijing 2022.
