Transfer deadline day deals: Chelsea land Enzo Fernandez, Arsenal get Jorginho, PSG's Ziyech loan in limbo

The transfer deadline has passed, and we're here to let you know everything that went down during a hectic Tuesday across world soccer. And just because the window is closed that doesn't mean all the action is over, with several potential deals hanging in limbo as we wait to see whether the proper paperwork was filed in time. Tuesday saw Enzo Fernandez complete a record setting deal to move to Chelsea that is expected to be worth around $130 million and Manchester United respond to an injury to Christian Eriksen with a swoop for Bayern Munich's Marcel Sabitzer. The final hours also saw a major surprise with Joao Cancelo leaving Manchester City for Bayern Munich while Arsenal have landed Jorginho from Chelsea.

Failed deals

These are transfers that could be done or may be falling apart  before our eyes

Hakim Zyiech to PSG

This has been quite a roller coaster with Zyiech set to join PSG from Chelsea getting into a paperwork mixup. Both teams signed their respective documents but due to them not being exchanged in time, Ziyech's PSG contract may not be valid which would see him stay with Chelsea. There are conflicting reports as to what exactly happened with RMC suggesting that Chelsea sent the wrong documents multiple times causing the deal to not be completed on time. PSG tried to appeal the decision but ultimately the deal was not allowed to go through, leaving Ziyech as a Chelsea player.

Barcelona may not have enough time to add Julian Araujo
This is a weird one since Barcelona were in on the LA Galaxy right back during the summer window but opted to wait. It seemed like things were set with a loan and an option to buy but that switched to a straight sale for four million dollars. Now, we're unsure if the paperwork was even filed to get the transfer across the line. With Hector Bellerin on the move to Sporting CP, Araujo was slated to provide cover for the first team while also playing for Barcelona B under head coach Rafa Marquez.

Done deals

Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea

It's a deal that took a while but the Blues have agreed to a deal that will be worth around $130 million. Chelsea will pay that deal in six installments with the first being £40 million up front. In keeping with the new trend of Chelsea to avoid financial fair play concerns, Fernandez will sign aa deal that will run through 2031. The Blues have remade the team for Grahm Potter, now it's time to see if he can deliver.

Jorginho to Arsenal
A surprise one this. The Gunners have landed Chelsea's Jorginho having seen Brighton dig their heels in regarding Moises Caicedo. The 31-year-old Italy international is expected to cost around $12.5 million and signs a contract till 2024. Mikel Arteta has tried to sign the player in the past and Jorginho could cover the potential absences of Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny.

Joao Cancelo joins Bayern Munich
One of the most surprising transfers of the winter transfer window: Portuguese winger Joao Cancelo leaves Manchester City for Bayern Munich. The German club have decided to sign him as Noussair Mazraoui is injured and Benjamin Pavard could leave in the summer as Barcelona are keen on signing him. It will be a loan until the end of the season with a likely option to buy included in the deal. It's not clear yet if Manchester City will now decide to sign another left back before the end of the transfer window.

Weston McKennie officially joins Leeds
It is official. American midfielder Weston McKennie has joined the very American Leeds United on loan until the end of the season. He'll be coached by American Jesse Marsch and will play with two U.S. men's national teammates in Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson. Similar to when he joined Juventus from Schalke, don't expect this to be a short move for McKennie. The plan is for him to stay at the club after this season, with this type of negotiation being the easiest way to make it happen.

We've had a busy close to the window

Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea is done on a contract that will run until June of 2031 The payments to Benfica will be in six installments beginning with £40 million upfront but River Plate will reportedly also receive €41 million over the course of the deal due to a sell on clause that was negotiated when Fernandez moved to Benfica in the summer.

Marcel Sabitzer to Manchester United has also been wrapped up with the midfielder joining on loan from Bayern Munich. Coming to the club as a short term replacement due to Christian Erkisen's injury, Sabitzer will help United push to keep their top four spot.

More signings at Nottingham Forest

The club has added Jonjo Shelvey and Keylor Navas to cap off their wild transfer window. These moves will give the Tricky Trees depth that Steve Cooper can utilize to keep them in the Premier League. It has been a dizzying season for them but already in midtable, safety is within reach.

Erm... Where will Hakim Ziyech play?

On the verge of a move to PSG, the teams have signed the contract for his transfer to France but they weren't sent back to be registered in time. If Ziyech can't be registered by PSG, he'll be stuck with a Chelsea side that has now crowded him out of playing time. The clubs are working on a solution but it's not clear how this will shake out.

Pedro Porro is finally done

He'll be given the number 23 shirt and will join Tottenham from Sporting CP on a loan with an obligation to buy for €45 million. Porro will slot right into the starting lineup as Antonio Conte gets his man. It's quite a statement signing even though it's one that took a while to complete.

That's it for England!

While deals can still be announced if they are subject to a deal sheet, no deal without submitted paperwork can go through at this point. We're still waiting on quite a few transfers that have been in the works to be completed like Enzo Fernandez and Marcel Sabitzer.

More on Matt Doeherty's move to Atletico Madrid

While the deal was supposed to be a loan, his contract ended up being mutually terminated due to the FIFA rule that only allows clubs to send eight players on loan per season. Djed Spence filled that eight spot on deadline day heading to Rennes and Harry Winks, Bryan Gil, Sergio Reguilon, Giovani Lo Celso, Destiny Udogie, Joe Rodon, and Tanguy Ndombele were also on loan. So to make room for Pedro Porro, Doherty had to leave on a permanent deal. He has signed a six month deal until the end of Atletico Madrid's season.

Nottingham Forest get a deal done for Keylor Navas

It's dizzying trying to keep up with the Tricky Trees but they have their number one keeper while Dean Henderson is out with an injury. Navas wanted a move that could provide playing time and he'll have quite the challenge keeping Forest in the Premier League. It's a loan until the end of the season for the Costa Rican international.

Araujo update

Keeping with the right back theme, things are almost done in Julian Araujo heading to Barcelona from the LA Galaxy. The loan will have a purchase option of seven million dollars that can become an obligation if certain clauses are met. The clubs already have good relations after Riqui Puig joined the Galaxy last summer but now Araujo will get his move.

Doherty leaves Tottenham

This may not be as glamorous as Enzo Fernandez's British transfer record but it is no less of a dramatic late twist because Matt Doherty has left Tottenham after a contract termination. That was not the plan throughout today, when he was expected to join Atletico Madrid on loan, but Spurs were at the limit of international loans and so the Irish international could only depart on a permanent basis. He has now signed a permanent contract with Atleti until the end of the season.

Chelsea did it. Enzo Fernandez is a Blue

It's a massive signing as the Blues will add Enzo Fernandez to their midfield from Benfica. The clubs still need to finalize the paperwork to finish the job but an agreement has been struck and as long as the paperwork is filed in time, Fernandez will be a Chelsea player when the window closes in less than an hour.

PSG and Chelsea agree Ziyech deal

One of the unexpected main storylines this deadline day has been PSG's pursuit of Hakim Ziyech on loan from Chelsea. Well, it looks as if this one is going to have a happy ending with reports suggesting that a paid loan until the end of this season has been agreed with the French champions beating out the likes of AC Milan, Roma, RB Leipzig and other Premier League clubs to land the Morocco international. The player is in Paris and has undergone his medical so this one should be official soon.

Nothing doing at Everton

Here's a tweet to incite the fury of Everton supporters across the world. Sean Dyche, their new manager, has seemingly called it a night in a sign that he won't need to be around for any conversations with signings.

Admittedly a key reason that Everton find themselves in 19th is because of haphazard recruitment, buying players with no sense what they're attempting to achieve. So in a way not buying players is growth, it's just that right now they need quality additions to keep them out of the Championship. So far the only player they've added to the squad this month is Ellis Simms, returning from his loan at Sunderland.

Morocco hero Boufal leaves Angers

One of the stars of the Atlas Lions' World Cup heroics in Qatar has moved club. Sofiane Boufal has left Angers SCO for Al Rayyan just days after Azzedine Ounahi departed for Marseille. Faouzi Ghoulam and Ibrahima Niane have come in for Ligue 1's bottom club, but it is hard to shake the feeling that it is already too late for them.

Palace add a promising youngster

It is becoming something of a recurring theme at post-Roy Hodgson Crystal Palace, that they add youth to their squad from London and Europe. Naouirou Ahamada is the latest to arrive, the 20 year old who came up through the Juventus academy before moving to VfB Stuttgart, where he has made 17 Bundesliga starts, scoring two and assisting two.

"I'm very happy to have joined this club," said Ahamada." It is an amazing club, and I'm very excited to get started. I want to show my quality, and I want to help this team with my quality. I want to play games, work hard, train hard and progress, and help the team."

That shouldn't be the end of Palace's business for today with Sambi Lokonga due to arrive from Arsenal on loan.

Matthew Hoppe is on the move again

After moving to Middlesbrough from Mallorca during the summer, Hoppe will be going on loan to Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership for the remainder of the season. With only 63 Championship minutes under his belt after also struggling to get playing time in La Liga as well. Hoppe needs playing time as he showed flashes of potential with Schalke in the Bundesliga where he also became the first American to score a hat trick in the German top flight. Now heading to Scotland where Cameron Carter-Vickers, James Sands, Malik Tillman, Ian Harkes, and other Americans are plying their trades, Hoppe will have a chance at finding his feet to bounce back.

Skriniar stays

Inter Milan have confirmed that Milan Skriniar will leave to join PSG, but in the summer -- not immediately. It is a significant blow for all parties given that the Nerazzurri get nothing for the player, PSG do not have him for this season and the player must see out this campaign with both he and the club knowing that their time together is almost over.

The team has signed all the documents to sign Hamed Traore from Sassuolo. The midfielder will join on a loan with an obligation to buy. The team will also add Ukranian international Illia Zabarnyi from Dynamo Kyiv to improve the defense and avoid the drop. It's a very big window for the Cherries so far.

Jorginho arrives at Arsenal

One of the big deals is done, Jorginho arriving at Arsenal in a deal worth up to £12 million subject to clauses that include the Gunners winning the Premier League title. He could be crucial in ensuring that exactly that is what happens. He has signed an 18 month contract with the club holding an option to extend by a further year.

Arsenal Unveil New Signing
Arsenal unveil new signing Jorginho at London Colney Stuart MacFarlane

Jorginho said: "He was a big influence because I know that he tried a few times to get me before and it didn't happen due to other reasons, not because of my wishes. So of course, he had a big influence.

"I'm very excited for this new challenge, and I just can't wait to be on the pitch to be honest! Everything has happened so fast. I was a bit surprised, but I took the opportunity of this amazing challenge. It's an important shirt. It's an amazing club, a big one, and I'm really excited and happy to be here."

The former Chelsea midfielder arrives on the day that Arsenal confirmed Mohamed Elneny has suffered a major knee injury, though a timescale has not been set he is expected to miss most if not all of the remainder of the season. Albert Sambi Lokonga is due to depart for Crystal Palace on loan.

"Jorginho is a midfield player with intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience," said Mikel Arteta. "Jorginho has won in his career, but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here. We are so pleased to sign Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club."

It looks like Julian Araujo to Barcelona is happening

Personal terms have been agreed to and the teams are working on the final details to close the loop for the LA Galaxy right back. Araujo would provide cover to the first team while also playing for Barcelona B under Rafa Marquez. It will be quite a step to see if Araujo can rise to be a La Liga contributor but he'll come into a good situation to do that. The deal would be a one year loan that can become an obligation to buy if performance clauses are met.
