Turkish soccer player Cevher Toktas was arrested after confessing to authorities that he killed his five-year-old son by smothering him with a pillow while the child was being treated in a hospital. The boy, Kasim, was dealing with symptoms associated with COVID-19.

Toktas turned himself in on May 4. The child's death was originally not ruled as suspicious, though he did test negative for coronavirus -- he was originally brought into the hospital because of a cough and high fever.

The 32-year-old father, who was in isolation with his son, reportedly smothered the child and called for doctors shortly afterward, claiming his condition had taken a turn for the worse. Kasim was then taken to the hospital's intensive care unit, and died two hours later. Toktas turned himself in to authorities 11 days after the incident because he eventually began to feel remorse. Here's more from Spanish media outlet AS:

The motive according to the 32-year-old was that he never loved the boy: "I never loved him, even when he was born, and I can't state why, I have no mental issues".

Toktas played for the amateur club Bursa Yıldırımspor. No trial date has yet to be set for this incident.
