UEFA Champions League scores: RB Leipzig, Atalanta boost quarterfinal chances with crucial wins

The Champions League round of 16 continued Wednesday with Tottenham and Valencia both showing weakness thanks to their injury problems. Spurs didn't start a striker against RB Leipzig. and it showed with a 1-0 defeat. Valencia was without its two center backs against Atlanta and went on to concede four goals in a 4-1 loss

It was a memorable night for RB Leipzig with Timo Werner scoring the winning goal in the second half on a penalty kick, and it's a result that means just a draw in the second leg on March 10 will see the club advance to the final eight. RB Leipzig forced Hugo Lloris to make numerous saves, but the World Cup-winning goalkeeper's stops give his team a fighting chance in the return leg.

For Atalanta, in its first season in the Champions League, the club is flying high. After sneaking into the round of 16, the Italian side put four past a Valencia team using back-ups in central defense. Hans Hateboer scored twice for Atalanta and Valencia was wasteful on its 18 shots. The Spanish side did get a lifeline with Denis Cheryshev's goal in the second half. Valencia would need a dominant 3-0 win or better to advance.
