World Cup results: Brazil win Group G despite Cameroon loss, Serbia eliminated in loss to Switzerland

Group stage play ended with some surprises as Uruguay and Serbia were eliminated and South Korea plays on

The final day of FIFA 2022 World Cup group stage action continues as Brazil face Cameroon and Switzerland take on Serbia in Group G. The Brazilians are the only team from the group to have qualified for the knockout stage as the remaining three hope to end the day having earned the final spot.

The action kicked off with a bang in Group H as Uruguay's 2-0 win over Ghana wasn't enough to advance as South Korea's 2-1 win over Cristiano's Portugal was enough to put them through to the knockout stages. Portugal win the group despite the loss and advance to the round of 16 as well.

Final day group stage chaos continued in Group G where Switzerland are off to the knockout rounds. The Swiss won a wild five goal affair against Serbia that ended 3-2. The win means Switzerland will make an appearance in the round of 16 and face Portugal. Brazil meanwhile lost 1-0 to Cameroon but it wasn't enough to cost them the group, and they're set to take on South Korea in the next round.

Brazil wins the group

Brazil have finished atop Group G despite losing 1-0 to Cameroon after making nine changes. It was a chippy affair with Cameroon collecting five yellow cards and one red card but the Indomitable Lions can hold their heads high despite being eliminated in a strange fashion. Brazil dominated the entire game but each time they went forward they were chopped down. Rigobert Song's side has toppled the favorites for the tournament despite being sent out of the World Cup

That's a wrap! A wild, open game, with five goals and Switzerland is through to the round of 16! They exit Group G in second place and will face Portugal on Tuesday.

Aboubakar noooooooo

Cameroon has their goal but he receives a yellow card for taking his shirt off in celebration. After already picking up a card, he now is sent off. Cameroon still needs another goal and a goal from Serbia to surpass Switzerland so that's quite costly for Aboubakar.

Things getting physical in the game as regulation winds down. Duricic has some blood after an elbow to the face. A yellow has also been issued to Gudelj after a poor tackle on Embolo.

Brazil seems okay with passing things to completion

Marquinhos is at left back now but Cameroon still can't break down Brazil's defense. Only 17 minutes remain before Brazil are able to pass to the round of 16 while not allowing a goal in group stage play. Brazil will be well rested for facing South Korea on Monday as well.

A yellow card was issued to Serbia's bench as there's a stoppage of play while the official continued to take a look at the penalty scenario. The team has time to change their fate, the yellow's won't help.

Gabriel Jesus' day will end as Pedro comes on to lead the line. Brazil now has one sub left and every player in the squad but the third keeper Weverton has made an appearance during the World Cup. Brazil are still searching for a goal, though.

Missed chance for Embolo

Switzerland spending lots of time in Serbia's half and have been able to find space in the box. It leads to another good combination that lands to Embolo in front of goal but the ball is wide of the target and is out for a goal kick instead.

Oh, what a save Ederson!

He could've been in a chair for most of the first half but Ngamaleu plays in Mbeumo for a header on goal. It's from an awkward angle but Ederson has good footing to make an acrobatic save. All Cameroon needs is a goal to advance to the round of 16 as the match heads to halftime.

Collins Fai gets a warning

Already on a yellow card, Fai went in for another rash tackle and also received a yellow card. It may make sense for a swap at the half with Oliver Mbiazo on the bench. With the match level, a Cameroon goal would see them in the knockout stages as thing stand.

35' It's Dušan Vlahović with a go-ahead goal for Serbia. Questions around lingering injuries for the player are quelled for now in a must win for Serbia. He drifts along the edge near the top of the box and his left footed strike slots past the far post. 2-1 Serbia at the moment.

Rodrygo is chopped down as he has Cameroon beaten and the Indomitable Lions pick up their third yellow card of the game in only 30 minutes. It's a matter of when not if Brazil's pressure will lead to a goal.

Ricardo is up the flank and quickly tries to connect on cross with Shaqiri running into the box -- he tries to split two defenders but is unable to get a clear shot off and the ball is out for a goal kick instead. Registering Brazil's first shot on target, Martinelli draws a good save out of Epassy. Prior to that, Brazil were dominating possession but not creating much danger from it. 15 mintues into the match, they could be growing into things which spells trouble for Cameroon.

Brazil are sloppy to start the match

This is to be expected as they made nine changes to the lineup but Cameroon hasn't been able to capitalize on that yet. Looking to go direct, the Indomitable Lions can certainly get a goal but they'll need it quickly before Brazil finds their feet in the match. Seattle Sounder Nouhou Tolo has already picked up a yellow card for a foul on Antony five minutes into the match. Cameroon can't go down to ten in this if they want to win.
