Rafael Nadal announced Monday that he will not return to Flushing Meadows to defend his 2013 US Open title. The 14-time Grand Slam champion posted to Facebook that he is withdrawing from the tournament.
"I am announcing that I will not participate in the US Open, a tournament in which over the years I have had very good results," Nadal wrote, according to a translation. "You will understand that it is a hard time for me. It is a tournament that I love and that I have very good memories of the fans, night matches, so many things.
"Not much more I can do right now, other than accept the situation and, as always in my case, work hard in order to be able to compete at the highest level once I am back."
Nadal has been hampered by a right wrist injury for the better part of the 2014 season. He won his ninth French Open title earlier this year but has only played sparingly since.
He has since lost his world No. 1 ranking to Novak Djokovic, the man he beat in last year's US Open final.
