WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Judgment Day beats Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in chaotic main event

The three male members of Judgment Day entered Raw on Monday night with plenty to lose. Every man in the group was set to defend the titles around their waists on the show -- and all three left still holding their belts.

In the main event, Damian Priest and Finn Balor managed to retain the WWE undisputed tag team titles in a rematch with former champions Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. As is their way, Judgment Day leaned on a lot of outside interference to remain champions, but the shape of the group feels very much in flux as JD McDonagh continues to try and work his way into being an accepted member of the group.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.

Judgment Day retains tag titles in chaotic main event

Cody Rhodes opened the show ready to cut a promo only to be quickly interrupted by The Judgment Day, leading to a confrontation over Rhodes saving Jey Uso from a Judgment Day beatdown to close the previous week's Raw. Uso then ran to the ring as Judgment Day were ready to attack. Judgment Day agreed that they still had the numbers advantage, only for Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn to flip that. JD McDonagh then brought a pair of chairs, handing one to Finn Balor. Balor, McDonagh and Dominik Mysterio then ignored Damian Priest urging them to leave and instead ran to the ring and all ended up on the losing end of a brawl. Later on, Priest yelled at McDonagh, kicking him out of their backstage area and saying McDonagh would never be in the group.

NXT North American Championship -- Dominik Mysterio (c) def. Dragon Lee via pinfall after a frog splash. Lee was rolling toward a win but ran into a Mysterio backdrop that landed his crotch on the top rope to set up the finish and allow Mysterio to retain with no interference.

Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship -- Judgment Day def. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn via pinfall. Unsurprisingly, Mysterio ran to the ring early to create chaos and distractions for Priest and Balor. This brought out Uso to take out Mysterio. However, McDonagh ran in to help Mysterio. Rhodes than ran down to ringside to even the odds, but after Owens hit Priest with a stunner, McDonagh hit Owens with one of the title belts, dropping him to allow Priest to cover and retain the titles. As Judgment Day celebrated, Uso and Rhodes ran back to the ring and all eight men brawled as the show went off the air.

It's nice to see WWE go back to the overbooked television endings that were so prevalent in the late 90s and early 2000s. There were run-ins all over the place, with eight men eventually involved. The situation protects everyone involved and it allows a lot of room to answer the question of "what's next?" That's exactly how Raw ended and it left plenty of room to explore how to move the story forward in the coming weeks. Grade: B+

What else happened on WWE Raw?

  • Bronson Reed def. Otis via pinfall after a Tsunami.
  • Tegan Nox def. Natalya via pinfall with The Shiniest Wizard. Becky Lynch spoke to Tegan Nox backstage, with Lynch telling Nox that she believes Nox should be the next woman to challenge for her NXT women's championship. This led Nox to ask Adam Pearce if she could get the winner of Lynch's title match at NXT No Mercy. Natalya interrupted and the two argued before Pearce suggested a match rather than a title shot being handed out.
  • Tommaso Ciampa def. Ludwig Kaiser via pinfall with a jumping knee. Kaiser seemingly had the match won but Giovanni Vinci was down and attended to by the referee, leading to increased tension in Imperium. It was later confirmed that Ciampa will get an intercontinental championship match with Gunther and the two would sign the contract for that bout next Monday.
  • Shinsuke Nakamura accepted Seth Rollins' challenge for a rematch. A Nakamura video package aired in the middle of a Rollins promo saying that Rollins told him to name whatever it would take and Nakamura wanted to challenge for Rollins' world heavyweight championship in a Last Man Standing match at Fastlane.
  • Nia Jax def. Zoey Stark via pinfall after a bonzai drop. Stark confronted Jax during a promo where Jax talked about all the women she'd attacked since returning and called herself the baddest human in the locker room.
  • Drew McIntyre def. Kofi Kingston via pinfall with a Claymore. McIntyre and Kingston argued when McIntyre was on "Miz TV," calling him out for not helping Jey Uso when he was attacked by New Day last Monday. During the match, Ivar of Viking Raiders attacked Xavier Woods at ringside, providing distraction for McIntyre to get the win. McIntyre then shrugged and left the ring, leaving Kingston to be attacked by Ivar.
