Less than 24 hours after Dino Babers was coaching Bowling Green to a 34-14 victory over Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship Game, he's now the new head coach at Syracuse. The school announced the hiring on Saturday.

"It is a true honor to have been selected to lead Syracuse University football, a program steeped in rich tradition, excellence, and success, both on and off the field," said Babers in a release from the school. "There were many coaching opportunities out there but none more attractive or exciting than this one. I've always admired Syracuse Football's scrappy demeanor, grit, and winning mentality, but what attracted me to this position even more is the University's intense focus on preparing its student-athletes for a lifetime of success. This is an incredible opportunity and one I am thrilled to have been offered."

Babers had been at Bowling Green for two seasons, going 18-9 and winning two division titles. His Falcons won their second MAC title in three years with Friday night's win. Before taking over at Bowling Green, Babers had spent two seasons at Eastern Illinois, where he went 19-7, leading the Panthers to the FCS playoffs in both seasons.

Prior to his time at Eastern Illinois, Babers coached wide receivers at Baylor under Art Briles. That's where he picked up the offense he's used at both Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green, and he'll likely be taking to Syracuse with him.

Bowling Green defensive coordinator Brian Ward will serve as interim coach for the Falcons in their bowl game.

Dino Babers has won 36 games in four seasons as a head coach. (USATSI)
