Giants first baseman Brett Pill has been taking grounders at third base to provide the team with insurance while Pablo Sandoval deals with a sore back, MLB.com reports.

"Right now it's just to give us some coverage, a little depth in case something happens today," manager Bruce Bochy told MLB.com Wednesday.

Pill, who appeared in Wednesday's game as a pinch hitter, has nine career appearances at third base in the minor leagues. He has continued to work in left field, and Bochy said that he wants Pill to practice more at the position before he gives him another start in left field.
