Duclair found Mario Kempe for a primary assist in a 6-2 defeat against Boston on Saturday. After seeing a decrease in ice time, Duclair responded by delivering his second point of the season. However, it seems the talented 22-year-old will need to continue earning head coach Rick Tocchet's trust before we see an increase in his offensive production. After all, it won't exactly be easy to break out in the NHL playing on the fourth line with Nick Cousins and Jordan Martinook.
Duclair agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Coyotes on Sunday, Craig Morgan of ArizonaSports.com reports. Duclair, one of just a few restricted free agents left on the market, is coming off a troublesome 2016-17 campaign where he had just five goals and 10 assists across 58 games. His struggles resulted in him being demoted to AHL Tucson midway through the year, where he didn't overly impress either with just one goal and seven assists in 16 games. Still, the Coyotes are going to give him another shot to redeem himself, bringing him back on a one-year deal. The terms have yet to be disclosed, but Duclair should be plenty motivated for a bounce-back campaign.
Duclair posted an assist and plus-1 rating in Saturday's 4-1 loss against the Capitals. Duclair has three assists over his past four games, as he is picking up the pace a bit down the stretch. While those in deeper seasonal pools might not find him useful yet, he is worth a look as a low-end option in DFS play.
Duclair is slated to play Friday against the Hurricanes, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports. Duclair has logged just three goals and nine points over 41 games with the Coyotes this season, but his results in 2015-16 (20 goals, 24 assists in 81 games) offer evidence the 21-year-old is capable of more production now that he's back at the NHL level following a stint with AHL Tuscon.
Duclair was recalled from AHL Tuscon on Wednesday. After a promising 2015-16 campaign at the top level, the youngster struggled enough in his second full season to warrant a demotion back to the minors in mid-January to get things sorted out. He's tallied eight points in 16 games in the AHL, so it's unclear whether he's done that exactly. Nonetheless, the Coyotes' offloading of multiple pieces ahead of the trade deadline should open up playing time for younger players like Duclair the rest of the way.
