Rory McIlroy wants that Career Grand Slam, so he is among the stars teeing it up at the 2022 Valero Texas Open, which starts Thursday at TPC San Antonio. McIlroy can complete the feat if he can win his fifth major championship in Augusta National Golf Club next week. He has his U.S. Open and British Open titles and two PGA Championships, but he covets a green jacket. That is why he is playing in San Antonio for the first time since his only appearance in the Texas Open since 2013. He will be joined by defending champion Jordan Spieth, 2021 Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama and a bevy of surging young players in the 2022 Texas Open field. McIlroy is the 8-1 favorite in the latest 2022 Valero Texas Open golf odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Spieth is priced at 16-1, Corey Conners is 18-1 and Matsuyama and Abraham Ancer are 20-1.

Will McIlroy or Spieth be worth the price when you are setting up your 2022 Texas Open Fantasy golf picks? Or would overlooked players like injury plagued Bryson DeChambeau (28-1) or 2021 Texas Open runner-up Charley Hoffman (50-1) give you better value? Before making any fantasy golf picks or betting the Texas Open 2022, be sure to check out the Fantasy golf projections and betting advice from SportsLine fantasy expert Riley Gates.

Gates is a writer for 247Sports and has covered a range of sports for nearly five years. He has followed golf closely for much longer and has a profound knowledge of the sport. He also knows what it takes to win, on the course and in fantasy sports.

Gates has been on fire all season. At the Valspar Championship, seven of his picks finished in the top 12. They included Sam Burns, who claimed the title at Innisbrook for the second straight year. At the Arnold Palmer Invitational, nine of his top 10 picks finished in the top 20, and at the Honda Classic, eight of his picks finished in the top 16.

The expert also was on the money at Phoenix, where his five top selections all ended up in the top 10. He nailed his picks at the Sentry, with four of his top seven picks posting top-five finishes, and he duplicated that at the Hero World Challenge. Anyone who has followed Gates is way up.

Now, Gates has analyzed the Valero Texas Open field and just released his coveted fantasy golf rankings for this week's event. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Valero Texas Open picks at SportsLine.

2022 Texas Open golf expert picks

Gates is looking for a big bounce-back from Spieth in San Antonio and is strongly backing him this week. His Valero Texas Open victory completed his resurgence last year after a long slump from the 2015 PGA Tour Player of the Year. It was Spieth's first win since 2017, and he has since regained his position as one of the marquee names in golf. He isn't posting great results, but he is 24th in greens in regulation (70.6) percent, and that is a big part of playing well on this course. He also will be amped up to go into the Masters, which he won in 2015, in strong form.

On the other hand, the expert is completely fading Ancer, who is having a dismal season. His run to the quarterfinals at the WGC Match Play doesn't change that. In stroke play, he has one top-10 finish, and that was at Mayakoba way back in November. He had been 33rd or worse in seven straight events leading to Match Play, missing the cut twice. His stats across the board are less than ideal for TPC San Antonio, so there's no reason to expect great things. He is 144th in strokes gained tee-to-green, 106th putting and 138th in scoring average (71.417).

How to set your 2022 Texas Open Fantasy golf rankings

For this week's event at TPC San Antonio, the fantasy expert is backing a major long shot in his top 10 who comes in at well over 40-1 in the latest PGA odds. Gates says this golfer has been coming on strong and could take advantage of the weaker field this week "to keep this ball rolling."
