Burns finished T-26 at last week'sPlayers Championship, which followed a ninth-place showing in the Arnold Palmer Invitational after three consecutive missed cuts. The model's top 2022 Valspar Championship predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2022 Valspar Championship: Dustin Johnson, a 20-time champion on the PGA Tour and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top 10. Johnson tied TPC Sawgrass' course record by shooting a 9-under 63 in the final round of the Players Championship on Monday. He finished T-9 at the Players, his first top-10 finish of the season.
However, Johnson has been extremely inconsistent this season, finishing T-25 or worse in three of his four starts on the PGA Tour. Plus, Johnson struggled mightily at the Valspar Championship last year, finishing T-48 at this event in 2021. He's not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the Valspar Championship 2022 field.
Another surprise: Tyrrell Hatton, a 25-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. Hatton has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.
Hatton finished better than both Burns and Thomas at the Players Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational with 13th and second-place finishes, respectively. Hatton has been able to secure those positive results thanks to his sensational putting stroke. In fact, the 30-year-old enters this week's event ranked first in strokes gained: putting (1.482), overall putting average (1.506) and one-putt percentage (47.22). Hatton didn't participate in last year's tournament, making him a sneaky choice for anyone looking for an under-the-radar pick in the 2022 Valspar Championship field.
