2023 Zurich Classic leaderboard, scores: Team of Wyndham Clark, Beau Hossler holds slim lead after Round 3

Saturday's Round 3 of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans was a return to the extreme scoring we saw in Round 1 on Thursday as teams once again torched TPC Louisiana in four ball with 10 scores of 63 or better on the day. The same team that led after Round 2 -- Wyndham Clark and Beau Hossler -- leads after 54 holes after the duo fired a 10-under 62 to maintain a one-stroke lead over Keith Mitchell and Sungjae Im.

That, coupled with a pair of stars falling off the pace, means Sunday is going to be an interesting final day of alternate shot as a host of players -- currently eight of the players in the top five -- go for their first PGA Tour victory in New Orleans.

The leaders

1. Wyndham Clark/Beau Hossler (-26)

They have yet to make a bogey this week, which is about what it takes to win this tournament given how relentless these teams generally are. As Hossler noted on the broadcast, they "ham and egged" it nicely with five birdies each, all on different holes.

Both Clark and Hossler will go for win No. 1 on Sunday and they likely won't have to fend off two players with over 10 victories between them after Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele fell well back of the pack in the third round.

"It's really hard [to win]," Hossler said. "Honestly, every player out here, the depth on this tour is really, really good. Frankly, getting yourself in position to win a golf tournament is difficult, and closing the deal is really hard. I think the more opportunities you get, the more comfortable you get, and hopefully we can lean on that tomorrow.

Other contenders

2. Keith Mitchell/Sungjae Im (-25)

T3. Vincent Norrman/Matthias Schwab, Matthew NeSmith/Taylor Moore, Nick Hardy/Davis Riley (-23)

6. Sean O'Hair/Brandon Matthews (-22)

T7. Harris English/Tom Hoge, Martin Trainer/Chad Ramey, Matt Fitzpatrick/Alex Fitzpatrick (-21)

This does feel a bit like a two-horse race at the top between Clark and Hossler and everybody's new favorite buddy pairing, Mitchell and Im. Mitchell and Im fist-bumped and laughed their way to 62 of their own in Round 3 after the two teams were only separated by one stroke on the first day (they both shot 67-62 in Round 2-3). They'll play together over the final 18 holes.

"He was honestly incredible," Mitchell said of Im. "The front nine was some of the best golf I've ever seen played ever, 6-under through eight holes. ... It was just fun to be a part of. I could only help him on two holes. I ended up making par on one of them and bogeying, but it just didn't matter. He was playing so good. I was high fiving him and watching him roll."

Elsewhere, Team Fitzpatrick got back what it lost on Friday as the Fitz bros struggled to a 1-under 71 in alternate shot. They did not struggle in Round 3 as they shot their second 62 of the week, becoming the first group this week with two rounds of 62 or better.

Afterward, Matt said he feels good going into the final round alongside his less well-known brother even though they're outside the top five and have a lot of work to do on Sunday.

"Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm not worried about this week for Alex," Matt said. "I've seen him out there now. He can hold his own. He can definitely be out here. He had some great results last year on the European Tour.

"I just want him to enjoy this week, and I think by enjoying it, you're going to give yourself a better chance. We played great in the four ball. We just didn't quite have it yesterday. I feel like it's a positive going into tomorrow. We're kind of used to the foursomes now. I just want to enjoy it as much as possible, and I think because of that, I think that's why we've done so well."

Where are Schauffele and Cantlay?

The favorites going into Saturday struggled a bit to a 6-under 66 that saw them fall from T4 to T10 on the leaderboard. What's crazy is that through three rounds of play, their lowest score by three strokes came in the alternate-shot portion of the event on Friday when they shot 63. They'll probably have to replicated that on Sunday to have any kind of chance.

Shot of the Day

This from Nicolai Hojgaard was pretty wild. It unfortunately didn't lead to eagle, though, as Hojgaard and Thorbjorn Olesen teamed up to shoot just 66 and fall well out of contention going into the final round.

Cantlay/Schauffele Stumble

Needing a big time finish, they just made bogey at the drivable par-4 16th. Not a good finish, and they're playing their way out of the tournament right now.

Xander and Cantlay in the Danger Zone

They're four back but struggling to get it going. And they have a par putt upcoming. If they don't make a little run at the end here, Sunday is going to be extremely tough.

Rley-Hardy on the Move

Davis Riley and Nick Hardy are in the lead all of a sudden at 22 under. They came in with double-digit odds but they have it all the way down to +450. They're one up on the Fitzpatricks (who are in the house) as well as Im-Mitchell, Clark-Hossler and English-Hoge.
