Fans of Nick and Nate Diaz know the brothers are prone to making wild statements in tweets and interviews. And both men have certainly had their fair share of issues with the UFC brass. So, when Nate tweeted on Saturday afternoon requesting his release from the promotion, it raised eyebrows but may not have struck many as a surprise.

"I would like to request to be released from the @ufc @danawhite @hunter," Diaz tweeted. "I apologize for asking online but u don't give me a fight asap I got shit to do."

Diaz tagged the promotion, UFC president Dana White and a random Twitter user in what appears to be an attempt to tag UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell.

Diaz's request for release follows weeks of Twitter complaints from the Stockton, California, native over his place in the UFC.

On March 18, Diaz tweeted about the upcoming Bellator 279 event in Hawaii saying he was trying to get on the card. On March 23, he sent several tweets suggesting he'd accept a rubber match with Conor McGregor but that McGregor was not "capable now or this year." Diaz was the first man to defeat McGregor in the UFC Octagon, stepping in on late notice and submitting the Irishman at UFC 196 in March 2016. McGregor took a narrow majority decision win in the rematch the following summer and talk of a third fight has continued for years.

Diaz ended his March 23 tweets with, "Been tryin to fight for 7 months @ufc. LFG."

Diaz has only fought once since losing his UFC 244 fight with Jorge Masvidal for the "BMF championship" in November 2019. That fight was a unanimous decision loss to top welterweight contender Leon Edwards in June 2021, a fight where Diaz was dominated before badly hurting Edwards in the final round but was unable to score the stoppage.

Diaz has been linked with former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier on and off for some time as the two flirt with the idea of a fight. They were originally booked to meet on UFC 230 in November 2018 before Poirier was forced to withdraw with an injury. Now, the two have gone back and forth on social media pushing to make the matchup happen.
