2024 Super Bowl, Chiefs vs. 49ers score: Patrick Mahomes leads OT comeback as K.C. wins back-to-back titles

The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions, again. Patrick Mahomes engineered a 75-yard touchdown drive to conclude overtime of Super Bowl LVIII, leading the Chiefs to their second consecutive NFL championship, this one a 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Kansas City became the first team since the 2003-04 New England Patriots to win back-to-back titles in what was just the second overtime game in Super Bowl history.

Mecole Hardman caught a 3-yard pass from Mahomes, one of only three players to win three or more Super Bowl MVPs, to end the 13-play walk-off scoring drive just one possession after the 49ers' Jake Moody kicked a 27-yard field goal to conclude a 13-play, 66-yard drive that put San Francisco ahead of Kansas City to start the extra period.

The championship-winning drive, which included a fourth-and-1 scramble from Mahomes and a clutch 7-yard catch from tight end Travis Kelce, was a must-score for K.C. The NFL's new playoff overtime rules -- both teams are guaranteed at least one possession in the extra period -- were in effect for the first time, and the Chiefs needed to answer the Niners' field goal.

Scoring sparked late with 34 points posted after halftime as defense dominated the first 30 minutes. The Niners started with a 10-0 advantage as head coach Kyle Shanahan went into his bag of tricks with wide receiver Jauan Jennings throwing a touchdown to Christian McCaffrey in the second quarter. Jennings was dynamite for San Francisco, also grabbing a late go-ahead score, while McCaffrey fumbled on the game's first possession but finished with 160 total yards.

The Chiefs avoided a first-half shutout with a late field goal from Harrison Butker, but it was a sluggish effort until the break with Kelce logging just one catch. The offensive malaise continued after Usher's halftime performance with Mahomes throwing an interception to start the third quarter. It was clear Kansas City needed some sort of break to truly push San Francisco.

The Super Bowl turned on a dime later that period. Butker drilled a Super Bowl-record 57-yard field goal, and the Chiefs converted a fumbled punt -- off the heel of Niners special teamer Darrell Luter Jr. -- in the red zone into a touchdown. Mahomes found Marquez Valdes-Scantling across the goal line on the next play. Held out of the end zone until that point, Kansas City grabbed its first lead of the game at 13-10.

Jennings' touchdown receiving (followed by a missed extra point) concluded a 75-yard drive that put the Niners back on top, 16-13, as the wideout joined former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles as the only players to throw and catch a touchdown in a Super Bowl.

The Chiefs drove down to the 3-yard line but settled for a 24-yard field goal from Butker to retie the game before Moody responded with a 53-yarder. However, Mahomes successfully executed a 2-minute drill as Butker added a 29-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Butker and Moody put together historic performances, combining to go 7 of 7 on field goals in the game. Moody previously set the Super Bowl record with a 55-yard field goal to start the second quarter before being bested by Butker.

Mahomes was exceptional, completing 34 of 46 passes for 333 yards with two touchdowns and an interception while picking up 66 yards rushing on nine carries. He spread the ball around -- eight pass-catchers had at least two receptions -- slowly but surely overcoming a threatening 49ers defense that knocked him off his spot consistently in the first half.

Mahomes, with his third Super Bowl MVP, now sits alongside Tom Brady (five) and Joe Montana (three) atop the mountain while becoming just the third player to win the award back-to-back, joining Bart Starr (I-II) and Terry Bradshaw (XIII-XIV).

Kelce finished with 93 yards on nine receptions -- doing much of his work in the second half and overtime -- while Hardman and Valdes-Scantling caught Mahomes' touchdowns.

Niners quarterback Brock Purdy completed 22 of 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown with star WR Deebo Samuel only gaining 41 total yards while battling through injury.

  • The Chiefs are the first repeat champions since the 2003-04 Patriots, snapping the largest such drought in NFL history.
  • Mahomes now has 15 playoff wins; only Brady and Montana have more in NFL history.
  • All three of Mahomes' Super Bowl wins have come after Kansas City trailed by 10+ points.
  • This is the fourth Super Bowl championship in Chiefs history.
  • The Chiefs are the fifth team to win three Super Bowls in a five-year span.
  • Kelce is the third player in NFL history to lead three Super Bowl championship teams in yards receiving.
  • Andy Reid is tied with Joe Gibbs and Bill Walsh for the third-most Super Bowl titles by a head coach in NFL history.

Keep on reading for additional takeaways from Super Bowl LVIII.

Chase Young steps up

Young only totaled 2.5 sacks in nine regular season and two postseason games with the 49ers entering Sunday. He just absolutely blew past Donovan Smith on the left side of the Kansas City offensive line to set the Chiefs back on first down, coming away with a sack of Patrick Mahomes. If he and the rest of the defensive line can dominate up front, that is the Niners' best chance of holding KC's offense in check.

Rough start for an All-Pro

Trent Williams is the best tackle and arguably best overall offensive lineman in football, but he just got called for penalties on back-to-back plays. First, it was a false start, and then a holding call that erased a big play to George Kittle. HIGHLY unusual for Williams, who had just two penalties accepted during the entire regular season.

49ers defense locks down

The Chiefs had an opportunity to capitalize on McCaffrey's turnover, but instead quickly went three-and-out. They left themselves behind the chains with a run up the middle for a 3-yard loss and then a screen to Travis Kelce that went nowhere. Dre Greenlaw made the tackle on that pass, and then he made another on the third-down check down to Jerick McKinnon, who is back in the lineup as KC's passing-down back after undergoing core muscle surgery in early January.

Leo Chenal with a huge play

The 49ers were moving the ball down the field with relative ease before Chenal made the first big play of the night, stripping Christian McCaffrey from behind. George Karlaftis recovered the fumble and prevented a Niners score. It was McCaffrey's first fumble since Oct. 23. (San Francisco had gained 46 yards on 4 plays before that.)

What to watch with the 49ers on offense

  • How do the Chiefs match up when the Niners use heavy personnel? They've started the game in base defense.
  • Can the Niners work the ball down the field in play action?
  • Does Kansas City have preferred matchups with its cornerbacks (L'Jarius Sneed and Trent McDuffie) against San Francisco's wide receivers (Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk)?
  • If San Francisco gets the downhill run game going, how will the Chiefs respond?

Coin toss result

The coin toss landed on heads, and the Chiefs won. At DraftKings Sportsbook, 46% of the handle and 43% of the bets were on the coin toss outcome to be heads. Meanwhile, 53% of the handle and 51% of the bets were on the Chiefs to win the toss.

First prop bet of the night

Congratulations to OVER bettors, also known as those of you who listened to R.J. White when you read his prop bets guide. It looks like Reba McEntire's national anthem went over the over/under of 89.5 seconds. As R.J. wrote this week, the anthem hasn't gone under 90 seconds since 1998.

Motivation

How did each of the Chiefs and 49ers get themselves up for Super Bowl LVIII?

Andy Reid and Travis Kelce handled the inspirational speeches for Kansas City. "Be yourselves and go play," Reid told CBS Sports' Tracy Wolfson as the Chiefs arrived to Allegiant Stadium. As for Kelce, his speech was apparently legendary.

"It was like a WWE-type speech. That was the best and most emotional team meeting in years,'' someone in the room told Wolfson.

Meanwhile, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy hit the film room to watch some performances by an all-time great who, like Purdy, was selected late in the draft: Tom Brady.

Key matchups

Kansas City seeks its third Super Bowl victory of the Patrick Mahomes era. The franchise captured its first Lombardi Trophy against the 49ers four years ago in Super Bowl LIV. However, this San Francisco team is a lot different than that one, and will surely look to exact revenge after watching the Chiefs rally for a 31-20 win.

Read our breakdown of all the matchups that will decide the game.

Chiefs inactives list

The big storyline for the Chiefs leading into this Super Bowl is that running back Jerrick McKinnon is ACTIVE just five weeks after core muscle surgery. That's a tremendous boost for the K.C. passing attack, particularly in the red zone. Meanwhile, wideout Kadarius Toney is a healthy scratch.

49ers inactives list

It's a clean bill of health for the San Francisco 49ers. On the team's final injury report, they had defensive lineman Kalia Davis (ankle) as the long player listed as questionable, and he was later downgraded to out. He was technically still on injured reserve, so he was not accounted for on the 53-man roster and this inactives list. No surprises.

Chiefs RB Jerick McKinnon set to return from injured reserve

Kansas City's offense is set to see the return of one of their more versatile weapons: running back Jerick McKinnon. He last played Week 15 at the New England Patriots, a 27-17 Chiefs win in which he both threw and caught a touchdown. McKinnon, 31, is coming back from a groin injury. In 2022, McKinnon (10 scrimmage touchdowns) trailed only All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce (12 scrimmage touchdowns) for the Chiefs' team lead in touchdowns.

In last season's 38-35 Super Bowl win against the Philadelphia Eagles, McKinnon had the crucial nine-yard run in which he went down at the 2-yard line to set up kicker Harrison Butker's game-winning 27-yard field goal.

10 wild Super Bowl trends you need to know

The Super Bowl is always fun because of everything that comes with it. Las Vegas releases special gambling props, the commercials are better, there's an epic halftime show, and it's just an event that brings together sports fans and non-sports fans alike -- especially with Taylor Swift involved this year. There are some weird trends that come with the Super Bowl, too, and that's what we are here to break down -- 10 insane Super Bowl facts that you will find interesting. Here's a sample:

1. The total is 28-28 all-time: If you're looking for an edge on betting the total, you're not going to find one. The Over/Under is a perfect .500 in Super Bowls. There was no total listed in Super Bowl I. The Over/Under this year is 47.5.

Will retractable field impact Chiefs vs. 49ers?

For the second straight season, the NFL will be holding the Super Bowl at a stadium that has a retractable field, and the league will be hoping that things go a lot better than they did last year. During Super Bowl LVII, held at State Farm Stadium in Arizona, the groundskeepers were dealing with a retractable field for the first time, and to say things didn't go well would be an understatement. The field was rolled into the stadium a full five days before the game, the grass started to die, and by the time the game started, it was almost too slippery to run on

Following the Chiefs' 38-35 win over Philadelphia, Haason Reddick called it one of the worst fields he's ever played on. Will this year be any different at Allegiant Stadium?

Super Bowl LVIII bold predictions

Patrick Mahomes cooks 49ers strong postseason zone defense: The reigning Super Bowl MVP is in the zone, even by his ahead-of-the-curve expectations. He hasn't thrown an interception in six consecutive postseason starts, the longest streak by a quarterback in playoff history when having thrown a minimum of 20 passes in each playoff game. The end result of each one of those matchups was the Chiefs celebrating a win. As a result, the 28-year-old Mahomes is set to become the first quarterback ever to start his fourth Super Bowl before age 30.

58 best bets for Super Bowl 58

The Super Bowl is the NFL's most wagered-on event of the year, and the 2024 edition taking place in Las Vegas will surely not change that fact. On top of your standard game-centric bets, sportsbooks often feature bets that have little (or nothing) to do with the actual contest, allowing everyone to get in on the action. If you are looking to place a wager or two for this game between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs, allow us to help you out.
