Mike Kafka won’t say it out loud, but he has to know that the clock is ticking and time is running out for him to stick with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kafka came into Eagles training camp solidly in place as the No. 2 quarterback behind Michael Vick. Then he broke a bone in his left (non-throwing) hand in preseason opener against the Patriots -- but not before he threw an interception that was almost returned for a touchdown -- and he hasn’t played since.

Nick Foles has, and the rookie quarterback has been sensational, carving out a QB rating of 112.2 in three preseason games. That has led to conjecture among fans and media that Foles has moved past Kafka for the No. 2 spot.

Making things even worse for Kafka -- veteran QB Trent Edwards, who looked awful in the first days of training camp, has finally shaken off the rust from sitting the 2011 season and he’s also looked good in the preseason. Other than Vick, Edwards is the only QB on the roster with serious NFL game experience.

Put it all together and the QB who came into camp as No. 2 could now be No. 4 on a team that will only keep three.

“That’s nothing I can control,’’ Kafka said on Monday. “All I can control is what I do when I’m out there on the practice field. And that’s my total focus right now, to go out and have the best practice I can have. That’s all I can really do.’’

Kafka isn’t blind to all that’s gone on in the last couple of weeks. Still, no matter what he was asked -- about his injury, about practicing, about playing, about his competition -- he pretty much said the same thing: “I’m taking it one day at a time.”

Kafka did acknowledge that it hasn’t been easy sitting on the sideline when he still has so much to prove.

“Anytime you get an injury it’s frustrating,’’ he said. “But you also have to realize that it’s football and injuries are a part of the game.

As for the notion that he came into camp as No. 2 and could lose his job without taking a snap, Kafka smiled, shook his head and said “Football is crazy like that.”
