One of the feel-good stories of Detroit’s rookie mini-camp is undrafted free agent signee S Alonzo Lawrence. Lawrence enrolled at Alabama, but left due to differences with Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban. He then enrolled at Southern Mississippi, where by his own admission he didn’t “take care of business in class.” After eventually playing junior college football for three seasons, Lawrence described signing with Detroit as second chance to succeed. “I wanted to get away and start a new life,” he said. “I’m a new me and I’m a better person.” Lewis’ size and speed will allow him to compete on special teams -- a role he’s willing to accept. “Special teams is how I’m going to get in the league,” he said.
