The Saints finished as the ninth-best DST in 2023 despite combining for just three defensive and special teams touchdowns and just 34 sacks thanks to 29 takeaways. Turnover regression makes the Saints a risky bet to repeat as a top-10 DST in 2024, but the addition of Chase Young in free agency could provide the uptick in sacks needed to keep them in the DST1 discussion. The Saints are a fine DST to draft if you wait until the final pick to grab your DST.

  • Saints' Chase Young: Plans to be back by training camp

Young received a positive report on his recovery from offseason neck surgery earlier this week, and plans to participate in the Saints' training camp, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Young's neck surgery earlier in the offseason was supposed to sideline him until at least training camp, so this report comes as positive news for the Saints. The former first-round pick out of Ohio State has struggled with injuries since he won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020, appearing in just 28 regular-season games over the last three seasons. Once Young returns to full health, he's expected to provide some pass-rushing prowess to the Saints' defense in 2024.

  • Saints' Marshon Lattimore: Present for minicamp

Lattimore has reported to June minicamp, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports. Lattimore had been the common topic of trade rumors this offseason, but back in May coach Dennis Allen met with the four-time Pro Bowler and appeared to mend relations between he and the Saints. That sets up Lattimore to reprise his role as New Orleans' top cornerback, especially as he seems recovered from the ankle issue that caused him to miss the final seven games of the 2023 season.

  • Dolphins' Marcus Maye: Back in AFC East

Maye (shoulder) signed a contract with the Dolphins on Monday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. After spending five years in New York with the Jets, Maye suited up for 12 games with the Saints over the previous two seasons. His relatively low game total was due to the fact that he dealt with a lingering shoulder injury, but his addition to Miami's roster indicates his health is back up to par. The veteran free safety will look to make an impression going forward and earn a depth role in the Fins' secondary.

  • Saints' Kool-Aid McKinstry: Getting closer to return

McKinstry (foot) is nearing a return to health, and coach Dennis Allen said Wednesday "there's a chance" he could begin taking on-field reps at the Saints' mandatory minicamp, Matthew Paras of NOLA.com reports. McKinstry is recovering from surgery undergone to address a Jones fracture in his right foot, an injury discovered at the NFL Scouting Combine. Due to the surgery McKinstry has missed rookie minicamp and OTAs, but it appears he's nearing a return. Allen said "I don't think we'll see him in any team work next week" at mandatory minicamp, but that the rookie second-round pick could be "maybe working in some walkthroughs and individual type stuff."

  • Saints' Tanoh Kpassagnon: Suffers major injury in offseason

Kpassagnon suffered a torn Achilles at some point during the offseason, John Hendrix of SI.com reports. It's unclear exactly how or when Kpassagnon suffered the injury, but it will certainly impact his ability to be ready when the 2024 season starts. However, according to head coach Dennis Allen, the Villanova product may be able to return at some point during the season, Rod Walker of The Times-Picayune reports.

  • Saints' Marshon Lattimore: Expected to remain in New Orleans

Saints head coach Dennis Allen said Wednesday that Lattimore (ankle) will be on the roster in 2024, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports. Lattimore missed the final seven games of the 2023 campaign due to an ankle injury, but he appears to have moved past the issue. The four-time Pro Bowl cornerback has been in trade rumors as of late, but after Allen's "positive conversation" with Lattimore, the cornerback is expected to remain in New Orleans in 2024. Lattimore will presumably be the Saints' top cornerback once again and will be joined in the secondary by Paulson Adebo and 2024 second-round pick Kool-Aid McKinstry (foot).

  • Saints' Will Harris: Finds new home

Harris agreed to a one-year contract with the Saints on Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Harris spent the first five seasons of his career in Detroit after the Lions selected him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. However, he saw his role diminish greatly in 2023, transitioning into more of a special-teams role and rarely taking the field on defense. The move to New Orleans should give him a fresh start and the opportunity to earn a larger role, given his experience at both cornerback and safety.

Harris announced Tuesday that he is retiring from the NFL, Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette reports. Harris, 34, was out of the league last season after spending 2022 in New Orleans. He spent the first nine years of his career with the Broncos, earning four Pro Bowl nominations and one first-team All-Pro selection. Harris played 172 career games, making 145 starts, and recorded 22 interceptions, seven forced fumbles, six sacks, four fumble recoveries and four touchdowns.

The Saints selected Boyd in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 199th overall. Boyd comes to the Big Easy from Northern Iowa. Ford is not known as a top-tier athlete, but he's a tackling machine with a knack for playmaking, as he recorded six interceptions over his last two seasons in Austin. He played middle linebacker at Texas and profiles as a depth piece behind Demario Davis.

After spending his first two seasons in Green Bay, the 25-year-old suited up for eight games between the 49ers and Saints in 2023. He accumulated four tackles (three solo) in the process. The Appalachian State product will now look to make an impression during offseason workouts.

  • Saints' Cameron Jordan: Recovering from ankle surgery

Jordan is recovering from offseason surgery undergone to address an ankle injury that hampered him during the 2023 campaign, Matthew Paras of NOLA.com reports. Jordan suffered the ankle injury in mid-November, and while he didn't subsequently miss any games, his defensive snap share did notably diminish down the stretch. The 13-year veteran has missed only two regular-season games in his NFL career, so recovering from an ankle procedure doesn't add any true concerns about his durability. Jordan has stated that he desires to suit up for the 2024 season, and with better injury luck, he could be set for a bounceback after finishing out 2023 with just two sacks across 17 games.

  • Saints' Johnathan Abram: Staying with New Orleans

Abram agreed to a contract with the Saints on Wednesday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports. In nine regular-season games with the Saints in 2023, the 2019 first-round draft pick recorded 26 tackles and one interception. By bringing back the 27-year-old, New Orleans' secondary maintains some needed depth following the offseason departures of Marcus Maye, Isaac Yiadom and Lonnie Johnson.

  • Saints' Nephi Sewell: Still on mend from surgery

Saints head coach Dennis Allen said in February that Sewell (knee) isn't expected to be ready for training camp, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports. Given that Sewell tore his ACL in Week 17 last season, it's not surprising that the linebacker will be eased back from surgery. Once healthy, the 25-year-old -- who recorded 15 tackles in 16 regular-season outings in 2023 -- is in line to reprise his depth/special-teams role with New Orleans.

  • Saints' Chase Young: Facing uncertainty with neck

Young's one-year contract with the Saints gives New Orleans protection in the event he struggles to recover from his upcoming neck surgery or otherwise misses time, with 61 percent of the money in the deal coming from per-game roster bonuses, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. Young has a $5.01 million base salary and can earn an additional $7.99 million in per-game roster bonuses, with the former guaranteed at signing and the latter only guaranteed if he's released. In other words, he'll miss out on around $470,000 for each game he's on the roster but inactive. Albert Breer of SI.com reports that scans on Young's neck led to reduced interest in free agency, due to a condition that was first discovered last summer after he suffered a stinger in the preseason. He ended up playing seven games for the Commanders, and then 12 post-trade for the 49ers (including playoffs), recording 7.5 sacks in the regular season and an additional sack during the postseason. Young was the No. 2 overall pick and Defensive Rookie of the Year back in 2020, but he suffered a severe knee injury the following season and managed only 1.5 sacks in 12 appearances between 2021 and 2022. He's scheduled for surgery Thursday and expected to be healthy for training camp, at which point the Saints likely will use him off the bench behind starting defensive ends Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson.

He'll likely be in line for a similar role with the Texans.
