Chargers RB Ryan Mathews gets the red-light for Week 17

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews was officially ruled out for Sunday's regular season finale at Kansas City, per the team's official website.

Mathews' 2014 regular season campaign comes to an end after appearing in only six games, registering 330 yards and three touchdowns on 74 attempts on the ground. Branden Oliver, Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown will all shoulder the load in the running game.

According to Vegas Insiders, the Chargers are a 1-point underdog at Kansas City. San Diego can clinch a playoff spot with a win on Sunday.

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) was unable to practice again Wednesday as the team prepared for Sunday's game at Kansas City. Mathews has missed two straight games and nine overall this year.

If Mathews can't play, Branden Oliver, Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown would share backfield duties. The Chargers are 3-point underdogs.

Branden Oliver heads Chargers rushing attack in Week 16 win

Chargers running back Branden Oliver lead the running-back committee Saturday, racking up 53 yards on 13 carries and adding three receptions for 28 yards.

Oliver showed plenty of burst while continually churning out positive plays, leading the running-back carousel with 16 of the Chargers backs' 29 touches. Ronnie Brown managed to pick up 33 yards on seven carries while adding a nine-yard reception, and Donald Brown delivered 12 yards on four carries as well as a four-yard reception.

If starter Ryan Mathews cannot play in Week 17, Oliver figures to once again lead a multifaceted rushing attack. The Chargers will square off with the Chiefs next Sunday.

Chargers list Week 14 inactives vs. Patriots

The Chargers have rulled the following players as inactive for Sunday night's Week 14 matchup with the Patriots: nose tackles Ryan Carrethers (elbow) and Damion Square, running back Ronnie Brown, wide receiver Dontrelle Inman, guard Jeff Baca, tight end David Johnson and linebacker Cordarro Law.

Carrethers had already been ruled out for Sunday's game so his absence won't be unexpected. The team does have all three of its questionable players available for action, as linebacker Donald Butler (quad) and offensive linemen D.J. Fluker (concussion) and Chris Watt (calf) are active. Also active are all the team's probable players, including quarterback Philip Rivers (chest), defensive tackle Corey Liuget (knee) and linebacker Andrew Gachkar (knee).

The Chargers have listed the following players as inactive for Sunday's Week 11 matchup with the Raiders: safety Jahleel Addae (concussion), nose tackles Sean Lissemore (quad) and Damion Square, wide receiver Dontrelle Inman, running back Ronnie Brown, cornerback Richard Crawford and linebacker Reggie Walker.

Addae is inactive after being listed as questionable on the team's final injury report Friday. Lissemore was doubtful to play in Week 11.

The team will have all six players listed as probable available against the Raiders, including running back Ryan Mathews (knee), wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu (not injury related), center Rich Ohrnberger (back) and linebackers Manti Te'o (foot), Dwight Freeney (not injury related) and Jeremiah Attaochu (hamstring).

Brown received just one carry, gaining 8 yards. He also caught his only target, picking up 2 yards on the play. Brown will look for more Week 9 against the Dolphins.

The Chargers have signed running back Ronnie Brown, U-T San Diego reports. Brown, who played for San Diego in 2012 and 2013, gained four yards on six carries with the Texans before being waived, adding five yards on one reception.

The Texans received minor contributions from several role players in a Week 2 win over the Raiders.

In the passing game, tight end Garrett Graham and Damaris Johnson were each limited to one catch on one target. Graham caught a 26-yard pass in the first quarter, and Johnson caught a 4-yard pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick on the opening drive. Jonathan Grimes rushed for 9 yards on three carries, while Ronnie Brown gained 2 yards on three carries.

The Texans continued their makeover of the running back position Monday, signing veterans Ronnie Brown and William Powell, the Houston Chronicle reports.

The team released three running backs earlier Monday, including Andre Brown, who was thought to be the leader for the No. 2 role heading into camp. Ronnie Brown, 32, carried the ball 45 times for 157 yards (3.5 YPC) and one TD while catching eight passes for 60 yards last season with the Chargers. Powell, 26, didn't play last season after rushing for 216 yards on 59 carries in 2012.

Ryan Mathews unclear about Sunday status

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews said his "mindset" is to play Sunday against Denver despite missing all three practices this week, per the San Diego Union-Tribune, which reported that he looked gimpy on Friday.

His absence would give Ronnie Brown and Danny Woodhead work as the dual featured backs. Brown rushed for 77 yards on just eight carries in the Wild Card defeat of Cincinnati, but 59 of those yards were churned up on a touchdown run that clinched the victory.

Chargers running back Ronnie Brown, who had a 58-yard touchdown run in the win at Cincinnati, could play a bigger role Sunday at Denver with starter Ryan Mathews nursing a bum ankle, reports ESPN.com. Brown finished with 77 yards on eight carries, adding a 9-yard catch.

"Ronnie Brown is a team favorite and a great teammate," quarterback Philip Rivers said, per the website. "He's so unselfish. He’s dressed so many games and not played. When he’s called on, you see why he was picked high in the draft and why he’s had a heck of a career. We’re glad we got him."

Ronnie Brown pulls off big play

Chargers running back Ronnie Brown had the biggest play of the day for San Diego Sunday.

Brown broke out a 58 yard touchdown run late in the game, essentially putting the nail in the coffin for the Bengals. He finished the game with eight carries for 77 yards. Ryan Mathews injured his ankle in the third quarter, which allowed Brown to get more playing time than usual. He'll take on the Broncos next week.

The Chargers received minor contributions from several role players during Sunday's win over the Giants in Week 14.

In the running game, Le'Ron McClain saw only one carry for a gain of 1 yard. Running back Ronnie Brown chipped in with one catch for 13 yards. Tight Ladarius Green, who scored in back-to-back games, was held without a grab despite registering one target in a 37-14 victory.

Chargers running back Ronnie Brown received some work Week 12 against the Chiefs.

Ryan Mathews left the game with an injured hamstring in the third quarter, and the team turned to Brown as their primary runner the rest of the way. Brown only received six carries, picking up 23 yards. The team opted to give Danny Woodhead a goal-line carry after Mathews left, which may have taken away a touchdown from Brown. Brown also caught one pass for -1 yards.

Brown will face off against the Bengals Week 13.

Chargers running back Ronnie Brown received nine carries against the Broncos Week 10.

Brown's work came early on, after Ryan Mathews was dinged on a long run. Brown had to finish off the team's first offensive drive, and then played the entire second series. Mathews was able to return, pushing Brown to the bench. He finished with 39 yards.

Brown will face the Dolphins Week 11.

Chargers running back Ronnie Brown and fullback Le'Ron McClain each registered a few backup carries during the Week 7 win at Jacksonville Sunday. 

Brown saw three carries for 14 yards in the game. He had a long run of 9 yards. McClain had two carries for 4 yards. Neither back scored. 

San Diego has a bye Week 8 and returns Week 9 at Washington.
