While Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin squared off in the NHL Wednesday night, their heir apparent was tearing up the Ontario Hockey League simultaneously. Consensus No. 1 draft pick Connor McDavid had his best night as a junior hockey player Wednesday against the Guelph Storm.

McDavid scored four goals and had two assists, marking career highs in goals and points in a single game. The Erie Otters added two goals to the six McDavid was involved in for an 8-4 win.

Among McDavid’s four goals was an effortless end-to-end rush started below his own goal line and finishing with some dandy moves on bewildered defensemen and popping a quick shot past the Guelph goaltender. It was the second goal he scored in the game.

With his six-point night, McDavid now has 98 points. If you’ll recall, he missed about five-plus weeks with a broken hand and competed in the World Junior Championship. So those 98 points have come in just 37 games for an average of 2.64 points-per-game.

The future NHL star is tied for fourth in OHL scoring despite playing 16 fewer games than league leader Mitchell Marner of the London Knights.

At this point, there really is no doubt that McDavid is going to be the first name called at the NHL Draft come June. You can see why there are a few teams that won't mind if they finish in last place this season to have the best chance at getting the 18-year-old via the draft lottery.
