Following qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal revealed a prostate cancer diagnosis over the weekend on Dutch TV show "Humberto." Although he's set to coach the Dutch through this winter's tournament, he is expected to leave his charge at the end of the year where former Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman will return as boss on Jan. 1, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal, according to Dutch publication De Telegraaf.

"I have now had four periods as national coach, I went to the hospital in the evening or at night in every period. Without the players knowing," van Gaal said on "Humberto." "They still see those ruddy cheeks of mine, and think 'What a healthy pear that is.' Well, of course, I am not.

"I don't think you tell the people you work with like that, because that might influence their choices or decisiveness or whatever. I thought they shouldn't know."

Van Gaal's treatment for cancer began in 2021 as the outspoken former Manchester United manager carried on with his duties while getting care under the cover of darkness. During that time, his players were able reward him by making the World Cup and captain Virgil van Dijk says they will want to ensure he has an unforgettable experience in Qatar.

Koeman oversaw almost a perfect 2019 during which the Netherlands' only losses were to Germany and Portugal (in the Nations League Final). This helped the team qualify for Euro 2020 which Koeman couldn't coach due his appointment at Barcelona. With a style that suits national team management and a deep knowledge of Dutch soccer, Koeman is a name that makes perfect sense for the role.

But the focus right now is on giving van Gaal a proper sendoff as manager with a great World Cup run. The Netherlands have been drawn into Group A with Qatar, Ecuador and Senegal. It's a group that should see them advance with ease, springing a platform for a possible run at the final.
