The tennis world knew Maria Sharapova likely was going to be suspended, but they didn't know how long.
The answer came down Wednesday, as the five-time major winner was suspended for two years because of an anti-doping rules violation.
According to a press release from the International Tennis Federation, the suspension is retroactive to Jan. 26, when Sharapova provided a urine sample that tested positive for meldonium, a banned metabolic modulator.
Sharapova admitted the infraction, and her case was heard by an Independent Tribunal in May. On Wednesday, they issued their decision, and the 29-year-old will not be eligible to compete again until January of 2018.
With her French Open win 2012, Sharapova became just the 10th woman to complete the career Grand Slam.
