College football scores, rankings, highlights: Michigan gets big win, Stanford routs USC, BYU takes Holy War

The 2021 college football season started with a bang last week and Week 2 acted as a dramatic follow-up. Michigan's 31-10 victory over Washington was an impressive endorsement of what the seventh-year Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh has built in the trenches. Michigan ran for 343 yards on 56 attempts, averaging 6.1 yards per carry against one of the Pac-12's top defenses to improve to 2-0 and make the case for inclusion in next week's AP Top 25.

For Washington, the loss was further indication that the program lacks offensive direction. A week after losing against Montana of the FCS, the normally physical Huskies ran for just 50 yards on 32 attempts as a Michigan defensive line led by defensive end Aidan Hutchinson wreaked havoc.

Harbaugh's former program, Stanford, also notched a big win as the Cardinal outlasted No. 14 USC 42-28 on the road, despite entering as 17-point underdogs a week after losing to Kansas State. The loss will be a crushing setback for USC's hopes of repeating as Pac-12 South champions and finding national relevance. However, the Trojans weren't the only Pac-12 South team to struggle Saturday night as No. 21 Utah fell 26-17 at BYU. The Cougars' victory snapped a nine-game Utah winning streak in the series and dropped Utah to 1-1.

CBS Sports was here every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the night.

Cardinal crush No. 14 USC in bounce-back win

Stanford crushed USC 42-28 to get off to a hot start in conference play. First-time starter Tanner McKee was tremendous, completing 16-of-23 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns in his first real action. The Trojans scored 15 points in the last six minutes to make the score look closer than it was.

The embarrassing home loss will almost certainly warm up Clay Helton's seat at USC. Already, former USC star Keyshawn Johnson took to Twitter to call out Helton's coaching performance. Helton is 46-24 in his seventh season as USC's head coach.

Historic win for BYU

What a 24 hours for the BYU Cougars. Just one day after accepting an invitation to the Big 12, the Cougars snapped a nine-game losing streak in the "Holy War" against No. 21 Utah with a 26-17 home victory. The win over the Utes was the first since 2009, before Utah joined the Pac-12. Quarterback Jaren Hall threw for 149 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Tyler Allgeier rushed for 102 yards. Utah running back Micah Bernard rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn't enough.

Stanford cements lead

The Cardinal continues to absolutely take it to No. 14 USC and fans are heading for the exits. Stanford just put together a 10-play, 67-yard touchdown drive to take a commanding 42-13 lead with just 9:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. Tanner McKee has been masterful in his first start, completing 16-of-22 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns. USC highly-rated offense sits at just 253 total yards.

USC in deep trouble

Late 3Q: Stanford 35, No. 14 USC 13

The Cardinal have followed up their dud performance against Kansas State from Week 1 with an impressive showing so far. Tanner McKee has been excellent as the starting QB after getting the nod from David Shaw this week. Stanford has broken numerous big plays in the passing game and managed to stifle USC's air-raid. Cardinal just went up three scores despite being 17-point underdogs.

BYU-Utah picking up

End 3Q: BYU 23, Utah 7

BYU extended its lead to 23-7 with a 4-yard strike from Jaren Hall to Gunner Romney in the final minute of the third quarter. Utah's Micah Bernard responds by busting a 50-yarder, but those explosive plays have been far too rare for the Utes tonight. The Cougars are one quarter away from snapping a nine-game losing streak to their rival.

Arizona State finally gets some separation

With Florida State's stunning loss to Jacksonville State on a walk-off touchdown still burned into our collective retinas, one score that deserved some more attention was Arizona State-UNLV. The Sun Devils entered the third quarter up just 14-10. That lead has grown to 21-10 following a 9-yard Rachaad White touchdown. The third quarter is nearly over, so there's still plenty of time left, but the Sun Devils need to create some more space to feel comfortable.

Star USC DL not dressed for second half

Starting USC defensive end Nick Figueroa will not play the second half of USC's game against Stanford. He came out of halftime in street clothes. Figueroa entered the matchup with an AC joint sprain in his shoulder and was a game-time decision. The senior was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention performer in 2020 after finishing with seven tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in six games. With Figueroa out, expect former No. 1 overall recruit Korey Foreman to get extended run.

Ranked Pac-12 teams training at the half

It's been a slow start for both No. 21 Utah and No. 14 USC in Week 2. The Cougars trail 16-7 in the "Holy War" against BYU. Cougars quarterback Jaren Hall is up to 93 yards passing and a pair of scores to pace BYU. Stanford is rebounding after its big loss to Kansas State in the opener and leads 21-10 heading into halftime. First-time starter Tanner McKee has 151 yards and two touchdowns in the first half for Stanford, while USC star Kedon Slovis sits at just 97 passing yards.

Florida State falls to Jacksonville State on a 59-yard, walk-off TD

This is one that you'll have to see to believe. Jacksonville State quarterback Zerrick Cooper hit Damond Philyaw-Johnson deep down the right sideline, Philyaw-Johnson cut back and crossed the goal line with no time on the clock to give the Gamecocks the massive upset over Florida State in Tallahassee.

Michigan into the polls?

Speaking of teams with a chance to crack the rankings after another strong performance, its' going to be hard to keep Michigan out after such a dominant win. The Wolverines outmuscled Washington at the line of scrimmage in the run game on both sides tonight. With games against Northern Illinois and Rutgers up next, they could also be 4-0 when they go to Wisconsin on Oct. 2.

Kentucky crashing the polls?

Will be interesting to see how much love the Wildcats get from the pollsters after a 35-28 win over Missouri. Chattanooga and South Carolina are up next for UK, so there's a good chance this team will be 4-0 going into a home game with Florida on Oct. 2. But for all the discussion about the Wildcats getting more vertically oriented on offense with Liam Coen as offensive coordinator, this win over Mizzou was very, very much a run-oriented affair. Chris Rodriguez Jr. went for 207 yards and three touchdowns on the ground on 27 carries. In total UK, registered 52 runs vs. 18 passes, although Will Levis did rack up 179 yards passing on his 10 completions.

Michigan's ground dominance

End 3Q: Michigan 17, Washington 3

What's most surprising about Michigan's dominance in this game is its 6.5 yards per carry and 258 total yards on the ground. The Wolverines are winning up front against a Washington program prided on toughness and solid line play. On the other side, the Huskies are averaging 1.7 yards per play on the ground and have yet to surpass 200 total yards. Just another gross performance for Washington after an embarrassing loss to Montana last week.

Arkansas trolls Texas about being 'back'

It's one of college football's most-used jokes at this point, but following a 40-21 beatdown of No. 15 Texas, Arkansas' social media team just couldn't help itself. If the Longhorns thought they were going to get trolled in the Big 12, wait until they get into the SEC ... whenever that is. Check out the video below. It's amazing.

Miami survives vs. App State

Final: No. 22 Miami 25, Appalachian State 23

Miami had a great chance to put this one away -- or at least get some breathing room -- early in the fourth quarter before some penalties gave Appalachian State life. The Mountaineers took a 23-22 lead with 5:48 left when Chase Brice found Malik Williams for a score. But the 2-point conversion was no good, and that looms large because of this final score. Andre Borregales hit a 43-yarder with 2:04 left (his second FG of the quarter), and The 'Canes got a big stop to escape. Another big game against Michigan State coming up for Miami. Really an intriguing/tough opening stretch for this program after it played Miami in Week 1. There will be a lot to clean up from this one as Miami never really looked in sync offensively.

Halftime: Michigan blanking Washington

The Wolverines lead the Huskies 10-0 at halftime. Washington's offense is abysmal and there is no clear direction six quarters into the 2021 season. The Huskies are averaging -- and I'm not exaggerating -- less than one yard per carry. And yet there appears to be no confidence in quarterback Dylan Morris. Coach Jimmy Lake is a defensive guy, and defensive coaches prefer to win lower-scoring games, but this is appalling. At this rate, Michigan could probably just kneel it out and be okay.

OPI ruins Miami's chance to create separation

A crucial offensive pass interference call on Mike Harley sets Miami back way behind the sticks and ruins a scoring chance. What a brutal way for a once-promising drive to be sabotaged. That forces the Hurricanes to punt and flips the momentum early in the fourth quarter back to Appalachian State. 19-17 Hurricanes as the Mountaineers get it back on their own 2-yard line with 12:53 left to go.

The Hogs are slaughtering Texas

On the first play after a Hudson Card fumble, Raheim Sanders runs one in from 26 yards out to put Arkansas ahead 33-7 with 1:50 left in the third quarter. It's no surprise to see the Razorbacks competing with Texas, but it's shocking to see them slaughtering their future SEC brethren in such a dominant way. Can only imagine what Fayetteville is going to be like tonight.

Matt Corral's big half

It's almost like Lane Kiffin knew that Spencer Rattler was going to put up some big numbers against Western Carolina and wanted his guy to do the same. Matt Corral goes 17-of-28 for 199 yards, 4 TDs and 0 INTs in the first half for the Rebels. Don't sleep on Dontario Drummond, either. The Ole Miss slot WR had a breakout game against Louisville on Monday and already has 5 catches for 98 yards and 2 TDs vs. Austin Peay. The Govs did pick up 224 total yards in the half, which is a concern for the Ole Miss defense with a gamely Tulane team coming to town next week.

Ugly first quarter in Ann Arbor

Washington and Michigan are off to a slow start in their once-marquee nonconference game. The Wolverines kicked a field goal after starting with favorable field position, but otherwise have a punt and turnover on downs. For how inconsistent Michigan has been, Washington has been awful. Quarterback Dylan Morris is just 1-of-3 for 12 yards. The running game sits at seven carries for 10 yards. The only first down for Washington came on a roughing the passer call. These are two of the premier defensive programs in college football, but this isn't the start anyone wanted.

K-State on upset alert without Skylar Thompson

This is deja vu for Wildcats fans, and not in a good way. Thompson left Saturday's game against Southern Illinois in the first half with what appeared to be a leg injury. Will Howard, who started the back half of the 2020 season when Thompson was injured, came off the bench, and the results haven't been good. Howard threw a pick-six to put the Salukis up 23-21 at halftime. It's still possible for K-State to come back in the second half and notch a win, but Howard's play last year (and this half) doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. Hopefully, Thompson's injury is minor, but for tonight, it seems the Wildcats will have to find a way to win without him.

Oklahoma going off

Half: No. 4 Oklahoma 45, Western Carolina 0

The offense for No. 4 Oklahoma came out hot Saturday night as the Sooners opened up a 45-0 lead on Western Carolina behind 398 total yards and five passing touchdowns from Spencer Rattler, who hit 11 different targets. Though the Catamounts of the FCS weren't expected to compete with the Sooners, Oklahoma's emphatic offensive showing in the first two quarters -- and defensive shutout -- were a reminder of the team's potential.

The UNC we know and love

The Tar Heels are going to wish they could've opened the season against Georgia State instead of Virginia Tech. Sam Howell is dialed in early and has already thrown a couple of touchdowns to put UNC up 21-10 on Georgia State late in the second quarter. Georgia State is moving the ball fairly well, but it looks like UNC's firepower is going to be enough for it to keep some distance here. Games like this are key for Howell and a new crop of skill players to gain chemistry.

Miami in trouble

Half: Appalachian State 14, No. 22 Miami 12

It's yet to be seen if the Mountaineers can generate sustained offense against Miami. But they didn't need to in order to take a halftime lead, thanks to a 100-yard kick return for Jalen Virgil. Aside from that play, Appalachian State's offense has been only moderately effective. On the flip side, Miami's aerial attack is leaving a lot on the table.

McKenzie Milton starts for Florida State

The Seminoles take on Jacksonville State tonight, so truth be told it probably doesn't matter who starts at QB for the Noles. Still, it's great to see Milton's comeback finally come to fruition after his stellar game against Notre Dame in last Sunday. Milton's journey back to the field after his brutal knee injury is well-documented and it's one of college football's great stories. The Noles have another option with Jordan Travis, but Milton played so well against the Irish, it would be hard not to go with him tonight. Good for him.

Appalachian State leading Miami

The Mountaineers are no pushover and look like they're out to avenge a 45-10 loss to Miami from 2016. This electric kick return gives App State the lead. D'Eriq King hasn't been successful through the air so far for Miami as the Hurricanes try and get back on track following last week's whooping vs. No. 1 Alabama.

Arkansas leads 16-0

No, that's not a typo. After another field goal, the Razorbacks have a 16-0 lead and are leading the yardage battle 219-57. That was a 7-play, 53-yard drive highlighted by a long K.J. Jefferson run. If the Razorbacks could finish drives, they'd be running away with this one. As it stands, Texas could really use a score here before half to wrestle back some momentum. More on that game here.

Wisconsin still struggling in red zone

If you thought the Badgers' red zone woes last week were all attributable to Penn State's defense, well think again. An Eastern Michigan team that gave up 490 yards per game in the MAC last season stopped the Badgers' first drive on EMU's 1-yard line for a turnover on downs. The Badgers scored a TD on their second series but were held to a FG on their third red zone trip. That's 10 points on three red-zone trips. 10-0 Wisconsin early in 2Q.

Oklahoma up big early

Early 2Q: Oklahoma 24, Western Carolina 0

Wow, what a first quarter for Oklahoma with 235 total yards. Spencer Rattler goes 10-of-13 for 127 yards and two TDs. Eric Gray and Kennedy Brooks combine for 79 yards on just seven carries. It's Western Carolina, so take it with an entire shaker full of salt. But if you're into Heisman chases, Rattler is going to be padding his stats tonight. Also seems certain that Oklahoma will leapfrog Ohio State and be No. 3 in next week's AP poll.

The cat is saved!

Miami and Appalachian State are squaring off in Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Saturday night, and there's action in the stands as well as the field. A cat got caught over the edge of the upper deck and dangled perilously for quite a while. The cat eventually lost its strength and fell into the crowd, where it was caught by fans who had a flag spread out for the furry feline. Check it out.
