Florida let a few dominos fall in the quarterback derby this year, but they found their man for 2013 after Brentwood (Tenn.) quarterback Max Staver committed to the Gators on Monday.
“I just got the call and I committed,” Staver told GatorBait. “Coach [Brent] Pease and Coach [Will]Muschamp, they said they are ready for me ... It was kind of a short conversation because they are in the middle of camp. I’m going to call Coach Pease back tonight to talk some more.”
The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder also held offers from Mississippi State and Louisville among others but had seen increased interest after impressing on the camp circuit. Staver visited Gainesville last weekend, and it didn't take long for him to figure out Florida was the program for him.
When was he sure he wanted to be a Gator? “Right after I camped there," he said. "It was good. I loved the campus, the coaches, the girls, football, academics, all of it. I think it’s a good fit for me, something different. I get away from the hills of Tennessee to the swampland of Florida. It’s going to be new and it’s going to be a fun experience."
Florida now has 18 commitments for the class of 2013. The program becomes the last SEC school to land a quarterback commitment but found their man in Staver, who is ranked as the 21st pro-style quarterback in the country by MaxPreps.
