The long and winding road of quarterback Tom Savage has reached its final collegiate destination--and it's one not all that far from where he started.

ESPN's Andrea Adelson reported Monday the former Rutgers freshman All-American and Pennsylvania native has transferred to Pitt, is enrolled in classes and will join the Panthers for the 2013 season after sitting out a second transfer year in 2012. Savage will have one season of eligibility remaining.

Savage made it all but official on his Twitter feed Saturday:

Savage is transferring from Arizona, where he landed after his his highly successful freshman campaign and injury-riddled sophomore season at Rutgers. But after spending a year on the sidelines in Tucson, Savage decided to move closer to home -- and, possibly, avoid Rich Rodriguez's spread-option system -- and applied for a waiver to play immediately at Rutgers. When that waiver was denied in January, Savage looked elsewhere and eventually landed at Pitt.

Even with Savage limited to his single season in 2013, his decision could prove a coup for Paul Chryst.

Savage took over the Rutgers starting quarterback job in just the second game of his career and finished his true freshman season with more than 2,200 passing yards, a 14-to-7 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and a 128.75 passer rating--only good for 60th in the country, but second-best among freshmen not named Andrew Luck, Matt Barkley, or Landry Jones*. Savage's strong arm and pocket presence should lend itself well to Chryst's pro-style system, and the starting job should be open following the graduation of Tino Sunseri. (The three other signal callers on the Panthers' 2012 roster may have something to say about it, however.)

There's just one little snag, as pointed out by the Star-Ledger's Mike Vorkunov:

Of course, the odds that Pitt's effort to leave the Big East following the 2012 season will fail are slimmer-than-slimmer. (Given what happened with West Virginia, the Big East should maybe count itself lucky to have the Panthers for this year). But if the Panthers didn't already have enough incentive to pack their bags for the ACC as soon as possible, now they've got that extra bit more.

*Has to be pointed out the other freshman ahead of him was B.J. Daniels. So, you know, maybe a small grain of salt with this statistic.
