Kansas is a basketball school -- and for good reason -- but it looks as though the Jayhawks are willing to spend to change that perception.
Athletic director Sheahon Zenger spoke at a "Football in June" event on Wednesday night, and he dropped a $300 million number on the people in attendance. Kansas is planning a huge renovation project to its Memorial Stadium, and the exact plans are expected to be released to the public in September.
While Zenger did not comment on the plan following the event, Kansas coach David Beaty talked to the Kansas City Star about it.
"It's exciting for me because it's a great time to be at KU," Beaty said. "That guy [Zenger] has done so much here, and for him to clear the deck and really make room for football right now -- and he's a football guy at heart -- knowing that our fans deserve a really, really nice stadium ... we want these people to be comfortable and really enjoy their time there.
"It will be something that will be just that next step in transcending our program to the next level. We really do have to keep up with the facility war that goes on out there."
This is big news for Kansas football. It's one thing to say you want to improve your football program; it's another to invest $300 million into a project to do so.
While details of the plan won't be known until the fall, it's logical to think it includes an indoor practice facility, as Kansas does not currently have one.
