Virginia Tech will wear black uniforms and a special helmet for Frank Beamer's final home game on Saturday against North Carolina.

The black uniforms were chosen by the players and the helmet was designed to honor Beamer, with No. 25, Beamer's number when he played at Virginia Tech, on one side and the VT logo on the other.

"We’ve been waiting all season for a chance to wear these uniforms," defensive end Ken Ekanem said. "This is a perfect time. They’re special uniforms, and with this being Coach Beamer’s final home game it’s going to be a special day."

The school also announced Monday that the uniforms for the regular season finale at Virginia will "replicate the Hokies’ road look from Beamer’s inaugural season as Virginia Tech’s head coach in 1987" with a maroon helmet, white jersey and maroon pants.

"My goals for these player have been the same for decades," Beamer said. "I want them to get a quality education, have a positive experience and mature as people in our program. This has been a very responsible group that has worked extremely hard. They haven’t asked me for one thing this season. When they approached me and asked to wear the black uniforms for our final home game, I had no problem with it. If it makes it more fun for them, I’m good with it."

All of this momentum will be a lot for North Carolina, winners of nine straight, to handle. Plus, Virginia Tech is 21-7 (.750) in home finales under Frank Beamer, including wins in 10 of the last 11 such games.
