Phillips was not expected back after struggling to make headway on a return from offseason back surgery. The next decision for the 38-year-old blueliner is whether he will hang up his skates after 17 seasons in the NHL (all with Ottawa). The 1996 No. 1 pick has 71 goals and 217 assists in his career.
