Rory McIlroy is one of the most highly visible players in the field this week at the Masters, but on Thursday, he used the spotlight to tip his cap to one of the best ever on the basketball court.

McIlroy wore white, black and gold cleats for Round 1 as part of a week-long celebration of Kobe Bryant's career.

According to a Nike release, McIlroy is one of "hundreds" of Nike athletes that will be honoring Bryant during the days leading up to his final NBA game on April 13. The black and gold design is also meant to symbolize the day Bryant's career will "fade to black."
