<img alt= shortstop Alex Gonzalez will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, the team announced on Monday.

Gonzalez, 35, has not decided if he will have surgery, assistant general manager Gord Ash told Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Gonzalez is hoping to have a week of treatment before considering surgery.

"For all practical purposes, I'm told it's a 6-8 month rehab," Ash told the Journal Sentinel. "Alex is going to have surgery. It's just a matter of who is going to perform it."

The team also lost first baseman Mat Gamel for the season last week to the same injury. He will have surgery by team doctor William Raasch as soon as the swelling in his knee goes down, Ash told the newspaper.

Gonzalez was injured Saturday as he stole a base against the Giants, and he was scheduled to have an MRI on Monday when the team returned to Milwaukee.

The Brewers signed Gonzalez as their starting shortstop in the offseason on a one-year deal worth $4.25 million. He had a $4 million vesting option for 2013 with 525 plate appearances. He had 89. He was hitting .259/.326/.457 with four home runs in 24 games.
