The following photo comes to us from the personal collection of Eye on Baseball reader George Rizer, who for almost 40 years worked as a staff photographer at the Boston Globe.

Now check it out as Thurman Munson, back in 1978, goes in hard (and wide) on Rick Burleson in a successful attempt to break up a potential double play off the bat of Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson (shameless plug!) ...

George's details reveal the game in question to be this one, which the Yankees eventually won 10-4. Munson's slide kept the Yanks alive in the top of the fourth, and they went on to hang seven runs on Boston starter Mike Torrez that inning.

The Yankees, of course, would mount a stunning comeback against the Sox in '78 (New York was 14 games out of first place on July 19) and eventually top them in a one-game tie-breaker at Fenway.

Munson, of course, would die tragically in a plane crash in August 1979.

Thanks to George for sharing this with us and reminding us of those days when the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry was really imbued with hatred.
