  • Ed Lucas: Released from minor league contract

Lucas was released from his minor league contract with the Mariners on Tuesday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.

A poor start for Lucas down at Triple-A Tacoma (.224/.259/.396) and Dae-ho Lee's emergence as a viable platoon bat effectively eliminated any chance Lucas had to reach Seattle. He will look to catch on elsewhere, but the 33-year-old will be hard pressed to receive another major league opportunity.

  • Mariners' Ed Lucas: Signs minor league contract with Mariners

Lucas signed a minor league contract with the Mariners on Friday, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports.

Lucas, a veteran right-handed hitter, is a versatile infielder that has experience at all four infield spots. He spent last season at Triple-A Round Rock in the Rangers organization, where he hit .316/.389/.420 with six home runs and 17 doubles. As Rosenthal points out, he could be a viable option in place of Adam Lind when the Mariners face left-handed pitching.
