  • Phillies' Alberto Tirado: Clears waivers, outrighted to Triple-A

Tirado was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday.

Tirado will head to Lehigh Valley after passing through waivers untouched. The 22-year-old hurler struggled last season, compiling a combined 4.07 ERA across multiple minor-league levels while walking 60 batters in 77.1 innings. He also dealt with a shoulder injury and has yet to exceed 80 innings as a pro, so a full-time move to the bullpen seems likely in 2018.

  • Phillies' Alberto Tirado: Bumped from 40-man roster

Tirado was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Monday.

It comes as little surprise that Tirado failed to survive the Rule 5 roster deadline, seeing as he issued 60 walks in 77.1 innings in the minors last season. He also missed time with a shoulder injury and has yet to exceed even 80 innings as a pro. A full-time move to the bullpen in 2018 seems likely, whether it's with the Phillies or another organization.

  • Phillies' Alberto Tirado: Hits DL with shoulder strain

Tirado was placed on the disabled list at Double-A Reading with a right shoulder strain, Harold Hoch of the Reading Eagle reports.

Tirado has made 10 appearances since being promoted to Reading in July, and has a 6.75 ERA with an 8:19 K:BB in 12 innings. He's at risk of losing his 40-man roster spot this winter given the lack of improvement with his control this season.

  • Phillies' Alberto Tirado: Promoted to Double-A

Tirado was promoted to Double-A Reading this week and moved to the bullpen, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Tirado was 5-4 with a 3.75 ERA and a 57:37 K:BB in 62.1 innings at High-A Clearwater this season. His high-90s fastball gives him the potential to be a weapon in relief if his control starts to improve. He already has a spot on the 40-man roster, which could help him earn a look in Philly in September when rosters expand.

  • Phillies' Alberto Tirado: Failing to build on last year's numbers

    Tirado is 4-4 with a 49:31 K:BB in 54.1 innings at High-A Clearwater.

Tirado entered the season with some hype after he posted a 1.98 ERA and 80:20 K:BB in his final 50 innings (10 starts) with Low-A Lakewood last year. That growth hasn't carried over into this season as his strikeout rate has dropped to 8.2 K/9 while his walk rate remains lofty at 5.2 BB/9. The 22-year-old has a spot on the Phillies' 40-man roster, but he still seems far away from seeing any time in the majors. It wouldn't be surprising to see the Phillies move him back to the bullpen at some point down the road given his continuing command problems.

Tirado was optioned to minor league camp Monday, Meghan Montemurro of The Wilmington News Journal reports.

  • Phillies' Alberto Tirado: Added to 40-man roster

Tirado was added to the Phillies' 40-man roster on Friday.

The Phillies opted to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, as expected. Tirado has an electric arm, and the results finally started to match up with his raw stuff in 2016, specifically in the second half. He posted a 1.98 ERA and 80:20 K:BB in his final 50 innings (10 starts) with Low-A Lakewood. The 6-foot righty will head to High-A as a 22-year-old in 2017, but could move quickly to Double-A if he picks up where he left off last season.

  • Phillies' Alberto Tirado: Showing signs of progress

Tirado is 6-1 with a 3.58 ERA and an 86:35 K:BB in 55.1 innings for Low-A Lakewood this season.

Tirado, who was acquired from the Blue Jays in the Ben Revere trade last season, started the season in a relief role before being sent to extended spring training where he was transitioned to the rotation. The Phillies also worked with him on making adjustments to have better command of the baseball and the results are starting to show. He walked 10 in 18.1 innings in July and has walked 10 in 26 innings in August. He still has work to do, but if things come together he could be a very useful asset thanks to his high strikeout rate.
