  • Trevor Brown: Released by Giants

Brown was released by the Giants on Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Brown had a .163/.208/.199 slash line in 196 at-bats at Triple-A Sacramento last season and played in only nine games thus far in 2018. The 26-year-old will hope to land a minor-league contract elsewhere after also struggling throughout spring training.

  • Giants' Trevor Brown: Shipped to minor-league camp

Brown was moved to minor-league camp Monday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

After slashing .163/.208/.199 over 58 games at Triple-A Sacramento in 2017, Brown's dismal hitting display continued this spring. The 26-year-old backstop went just 3-for-24 (.125) with eight strikeouts over 13 Cactus League games for San Francisco. Look for him to return to Triple-A Sacramento this season.

Brown rolled his ankle on March 21 and has been working his way back to playing condition over the past several weeks. • Giants' Trevor Brown: Probably won't break camp

Brown is feeling better but needs another week to recover after rolling his ankle Tuesday, so he'll probably head to Triple-A Sacramento to start the season, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.

The club's third catcher may not have made the roster anyway, consider Nick Hundley ranks as the backup to Buster Posey. Expect Brown to play frequently at Sacramento in the early part of the 2017 season, whenever he can return.

  • Giants' Trevor Brown: Dealing with rolled ankle

Brown rolled his ankle on Tuesday and is being labeled as day-to-day, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.

The injury doesn't seem overly serious, and it appears Brown shouldn't be sidelined for too long. The 25-year-old has seen all but four of his 50 innings this spring behind the dish, and with the recent acquisition of Nick Hundley, it seems unlikely he'll crack the roster as a third catcher.

  • Giants' Trevor Brown: Set to see time at second base

Brown will see some playing time at second base this spring and may also play first or third, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.

This move makes sense following the offseason acquisition of Nick Hundley. Brown started 97 games at second base in the minors between 2013 and 2014, so a move to the infield should come naturally. If it works out, it could allow the Giants to carry three catchers. Brown slashed .237/.283/.364 in 75 games last season and could now see a more expansive role if he turns in a strong spring.

  • Giants' Trevor Brown: Will start Friday against the Cubs

Brown (illness) will start behind the dish Friday against Jon Lester and the Cubs, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.

Brown was going to get a spot start Thursday, but an illness kept him on the bench. He is still battling the virus but is reportedly healthy enough to suit up Friday. While a game against Jon Lester is rarely one to take advantage of, the righty-lefty matchup could make Brown a decent punt play at catcher in daily formats.

  • Giants' Trevor Brown: Drives in three Sunday versus Baltimore

Brown finished 3-for-5 with three RBI during Sunday's 8-7 loss to the Orioles.

Making his weekly start as Buster Posey took a seat, Brown notched his third three-hit game of the season and drove in his first runs of the month. Brown has proven himself to be more than just a capable backup, as his numbers project favorable when extrapolated over a full season, but he is unlikely to see significant playing time at any point unless Posey is forced to miss time.

  • Giants' Trevor Brown: Blasts off in Wednesday start

Brown went 3-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and two runs against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Buster Posey served as the DH, opening up catcher for Brown's first start since the third of July, and the rookie celebrated his return to the lineup with a bang. The homer was his first since way back on May 15, but Brown has been reasonably productive on those relatively rare occasions on which he's gotten into the lineup.

  • Giants' Trevor Brown: Making second straight start at catcher

Brown will draw the start at catcher and bat eighth in the order Sunday against the Rays, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Playing in an American League park will allow manager Bruce Bochy to utilize Posey as his DH for the second straight day, resulting in another start for Brown behind the plate. Brown came through with a 3-for-3 showing Saturday, but given his limited offensive production throughout his minor-league career, expectations going forward should remain tempered.

  • Giants' Trevor Brown: In lineup Saturday

Brown is in the lineup for Saturday's tilt with the Cubs.

Buster Posey will slide over to first base, while Brown will handle duties behind the plate Saturday. He will have a touch matchup against the left-handed Jon Lester, as he is just 1-for-14 against southpaws as a starter this season.
