Ciryl Gane says he doesn't want to be recognized as a champion until he wins the undisputed title. The interim heavyweight title-holder gets that chance on Saturday against sitting champion Francis Ngannou in the main event of UFC 270. The unification fight headlines the MMA showcase from the Honda Center in Anaheim, with the main UFC 270 fight card scheduled for 10 p.m. ET. The top-ranked Gane was awarded an interim belt after beating Derrick Lewis. Gane told the media this week he won't consider himself a champion unless he defeats Ngannou, who will make his first defense since beating Stipe Miocic for the title last March.
Gane is a -160 favorite (risk $160 to win $100), while Ngannou is priced at +140 in the latest Ngannou vs. Gane odds from Caesars Sportsbook. In the co-main event, champion Brandon Moreno is the -170 favorite in the UFC 270 odds as he meets former champion Deiveson Figueiredo (+150) in a trilogy match to settle their rivalry in the flyweight division. Kattar dominated the action from the opening bell to win a lopsided decision and give Gombas' followers an easy winner. Anyone who has followed him already has seen massive returns.
Now, with UFC 270: Ngannou vs. Gane on deck, Gombas has studied the card from every angle and released his top MMA picks. Those picks and predictions. A successful parlay would result in a payout of better than 16-1. You can only see Gombas' UFC 270 picks at SportsLine.
UFC Fight Night: Ngannou vs. Gane preview
The main event features what UFC president Dana White repeatedly has called perhaps the best stylistic matchup for a heavyweight title fight in the promotion's history. Ngannou (16-3) is widely believed to be the most powerful puncher who has ever set foot in the Octagon, and his portfolio includes a vast array of violent knockouts.
However, back-to-back losses against Miocic and Lewis, a two-time title challenger, slowed Ngannou's quest for the title. The Cameroon-born fighter vowed to work on other aspects of his game to avoid being regarded as one-dimensional, and his recent fights have shown improvement in grappling, takedown defense and conditioning.
Even so, the signature power remains his calling card and his last five fights have ended in knockout victories inside of two rounds. His rematch with Miocic saw the script flipped, as he dominated the contest before ending it with a counter uppercut in the second round.
Gane (10-0) is noted as one of the best overall athletes to ever thrive in the heavyweight division. He came from a background of kickboxing and Muay Thai fighting before transitioning to mixed martial arts. The 31-year-old French fighter has four wins by knockout and three by submission.
His versatile skill set was on display against Lewis as he used his reach and speed to set the pace early before moving and finishing Lewis in the third after stunning the slugger with a series of kicks and moving in for the finish. You can only see who to back at SportsLine.
UFC 270 predictions
We'll share one of Gombas' UFC 270 picks here: He is siding with Cody Stamann (+170) to pull the upset of Said Nurmagomedov (-190) in a showdown of bantamweight prospects.
Said Nurmagomedov (14-2) is the cousin of Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired in 2020 as the undefeated lightweight champion. Said Nurmagomedov does not possess the same wrestling-heavy style as his more famous relative, but prefers to mix in striking with submissions while using his length to his advantage. The 29-year-old Russian is 3-1 in four UFC appearances, and his last outing resulted in a stoppage of Mark Striegl.
Stamann (19-4-1) is a five-year UFC veteran who has tested his mettle against many of the division's elite fighters, including current champion Aljamain Sterling. But the 32-year-old Michigan native needs a win Saturday in order to avoid a three-fight losing streak.
"Cody Stamann is the classic wrestler-boxer. He will look to stick to Said Nurmagomedov like glue and overcome the six-inch reach disadvantage. Nurmagomedov is a tricky striker and likes to stay at range. If Stamann can latch on to him, I think he can win," Gombas told SportsLine.
