  • Ryan Sproul: Signs overseas

Sproul has signed a one-year contract with HC Kunlun Red Star of the KHL, Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports.

Sproul played in 64 AHL games last campaign, notching 10 goals and 29 points over that span. The 26-year-old hasn't appeared in an NHL contest since 2017-18, and the fact that he's signed overseas doesn't bode well for his chances of getting another shot at the top level in the future.

  • Rangers' Ryan Sproul: Laces up for 16 games in 2017-18

Sproul averaged 16:22 of ice time in 2017-18, playing in 16 games and pitching in one goal and four assists.

During the beginning of the season Sproul played largely with AHL Hartford, impressing by posting 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists) in 44 games before getting the permanent recall March 13. Sproul's production in the minors and five NHL points show he can contribute offensively, but he was handed a high 63 percent offensive zone start rate, and went minus-six as well showing a potential need to improve defensively. The 25-year-old is set to be a free agent, so he could wind up somewhere other than Broadway in 2018-19.

  • Rangers' Ryan Sproul: Making most of NHL opportunity

Sproul recorded a helper for the second consecutive contest in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Flyers.

Sproul now has four assists in eight NHL appearances this season. The Red Wings' second-rounder from the 2011 NHL Entry Draft has flashed some offensive skills from the blue line as a Ranger, but earning consistent playing time at the highest level has been a problem for the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Sproul.

  • Rangers' Ryan Sproul: Rejoins NHL roster

Sproul was added from AHL Hartford on Tuesday, Colin Stephenson of Newsday reports.

Sproul could draw into the lineup for Wednesday's matchup against the Penguins, depending on the results of Anthony DeAngelo's (lower body) MRI on Tuesday. Even if that is the case for the 25-year-old blueliner, he doesn't provide a ton of upside from a fantasy standpoint. Sproul averaged just 14:48 of ice time per game in his four NHL appearances earlier this season.

  • Rangers' Ryan Sproul: Returned to minors

Sproul was reassiend to AHL Hartford on Wednesday.

Sproul drew into four straight contests for the Rangers and notched an assist in each of the last two, but it wasn't enough to keep him around after the team swapped blueliners (Nick Holden to Boston for Rob O'Gara) and picked up a third-round selection for the 2018 NHL draft. However, the same number of blueliners remain on the active roster heading into the final game of the road trip. This could signify that one the three injured defensemen -- Ryan McDonagh (upper body), Steve Kampfer (hand) or Kevin Shattenkirk (knee) -- is nearing a return to the ice. Kampfer may be the most likely candidate of the three, but none is guaranteed to retake the ice yetvwhen the Rangers return home Friday to face the Wild.

  • Rangers' Ryan Sproul: Recalled Monday

Sproul was recalled from AHL Hartford on Monday.

The 25-year-old's promotion comes after fellow blueliner Steven Kampfer was ruled out for 4-to-6 weeks due to a fractured hand. Much like Kampfer, Sproul is a right-shooting, puck-moving defenseman, and has tallied 10 goals and 22 points in 41 minor-league contests this season. New York is now carrying just six healthy defenders, so Sproul can be expected to step into the lineup for Tuesday's road tilt against Minnesota.

  • Rangers' Ryan Sproul: Heading to Big Apple

Sproul was traded from the Red Wings to the Rangers in exchange for forward Matt Puempel on Saturday.

The Red Wings had Sproul down in AHL Grand Rapids to prove his health following a knee injury that dates back to March, but he didn't get a chance to make his season debut with the parent club before this swap for Puempel. Both players involved in this deal were waived ahead of this season, but Detroit is trying to clear up cap space to accommodate the return of burgeoning forward Andreas Athanasiou, who ended his contract holdout Friday and inked a one-year, $1.3875 million deal.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Back in minors, hoping for brief stay

Sproul (knee) has rejoined AHL Grand Rapids, though he's hoping for an abbreviated stay in the minors, MLive.com reports. "My goal is to be back with the Wings as quickly as possible," said the young defenseman. "Obviously, this was a great start here and I look forward to keep pushing here to make it back up there."

The Ontario native contributed a goal in the Griffins' 5-2 home win over Manitoba on Friday, which obviously won't hurt his chances of getting an expedited return to the NHL. Detroit could use him, too, as Niklas Kronwall (groin) is perpetually injured.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Deemed expendable

Sproul was waived by Detroit on Monday, Rick Ralph of TSN 1290 Winnipeg reports.

Sproul was still recovering from an ACL tear when training camp opened on Sept. 14, and he wasn't able to play a preseason game until Sept. 24. This lack of preparation for the campaign certainly hampered Sproul's chances of cracking the Wings' roster, though he was facing an uphill battle all along. If the defender clears waivers, he'll likely be sent to AHL Grand Rapids, where he'll be a top option for recall as the season progresses.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Returning Monday

Sproul (knee) will make his preseason debut Monday against Pittsburgh, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

The 2011 second-round pick has been out with an ACL tear in his left knee and there was uncertainty regarding whether or not he would be able to return in time for the beginning of the season. Sproul's appearance in Monday's game seems to put these worries to rest.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Easing into camp

Sproul (knee) will get on the ice during training camp, but not quite at 100 percent, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

The news that Sproul will be lacing up his skates bodes well for his availability Opening Night against the Wild. Perhaps the bigger question facing the 24-year-old is whether he can beat out Luke Witkowski and Xavier Ouellet for a third-pairing role if he's limited in camp.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Unfavorable outlook this season

Sproul (knee) faces a lot of uncertainty heading into the 2017-18 season, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports, adding that the depth defenseman could ultimately be traded or lost to waivers.

Sproul's status for the start of the season is up in the air, causing quite the conundrum for the 24-year-old defenseman. Besides, as talented a player as he may be, Sproul presumably would have to bring his best in camp to fend off summer acquisition Luke Witkowski -- a guy who can play defense or forward -- for a regular role at the highest level. Taken in the second round (55th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Sproul produced seven points in 27 NHL games last year and was a perpetual bench warmer. As you can see, there are several reasons to avoid the Ontario native in fantasy drafts this fall.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Could get off to delayed start next season

Sproul might miss the start of the 2017-18 campaign due to his knee injury, MLive.com reports.

According to theScore, the young defenseman will be available to the Golden Knights in the expansion draft. However, he's barely moved on from rookie status -- having played in 27 games this past season -- and the Golden Knights probably won't want to litter their new franchise with inexperienced players.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Return timetable hinges on surgery decision

Sproul (knee) will be ready for the start of next season if he doesn't end up requiring surgery, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Sproul has a partial tear of his ACL in the left knee, sustained in a March 4 contest against the Oilers. He averaged 2:08 on the power play as a rookie defenseman, but Detroit's been pitiful with the extra attacker this year, so the result was only one goal and two helpers with the man advantage. Still, Sproul's role naturally figures to expand with more experience, at which point he could warrant a pickup in deep leagues.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Moved to injured reserve

Sproul (knee) has been placed on injured reserve, according to the NHL media site.

The move shouldn't come as much of a surprise given that he will miss the remainder of the regular season due to an ACL injury. The youngster finished 2017 with seven points (one goal, six assists), 46 shots on goal and a minus-8 rating over 27 contests and figures to open next season in a battle for an Opening Night roster spot.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Out for season

Sproul will miss the rest of the regular season due to an ACL injury, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.

The rookie defenseman is contemplating whether to proceed with surgery on his left knee after sustaining the injury in Saturday's game against the Oilers. Either way, this is quite unfortunate, as the Red Wings were set to get Sproul more playing time down the stretch. The 24-year-old finishes with seven points and a minus-8 rating through 27 games. He'll be a restricted free agent after the 2017-18 campaign.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Sustains knee injury, return date unclear

Sproul is dealing with a sprained left knee and will be evaluated further, MLive.com reports.

The rookie blueliner sustained this injury in the second period of Saturday's eventual road loss to the Oilers. He required assistance getting off the ice and the initial prognosis doesn't seem too promising. "He'll be out," coach Jeff Blashill said. "He'll get re-evaluated when we get home, but it looks like lower body, sprained knee, so how serious it is, I'm not sure yet." Given that veteran Jonathan Ericsson is out for the season with a wrist injury, the Wings will have to call up a replacement from AHL Grand Rapids just to reach the minimum of six defensemen on the active roster.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Forced out of Saturday's game

Sproul left Saturday's game against the Oilers due to a lower-body injury and will not return, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Sproul appeared to suffer an injury to his left leg or knee area and was helped off the ice by his teammates. If the defenseman is forced to miss time the team is likely to have to dip down to Grand Rapids of the AHL for reinforcements.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Subbing in Saturday

Sproul will replace Mike Green (illness) for Saturday's matinee against the Capitals in Detroit, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

The rookie defenseman has only drawn into four of 15 games this month, though the Red Wings are nearly mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, and that could ultimately afford more playing time for Sproul this season. There's a chance that he sees time on the power play in this game, having learned the nuances of playing in that spot earlier on -- he's bagged a goal and two helpers on the man advantage through 22 games.

  • Red Wings' Ryan Sproul: Frequently serving as healthy scratch

Sproul has been a healthy scratch for 13 of the Wings' last 20 games.

As such, the 23-year-old hasn't had a ton of opportunity to produce, leaving him stuck with a goal and five assists across 21 games. Sproul has averaged 15:38 of ice time when in the lineup, but considering how infrequently he dresses for game action, there's little to no fantasy value here at this stage of his career.
