  • Eric Cornel: Won't return to Buffalo

Cornel wasn't issued a qualifying offer from the Sabres, making him a free agent, Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reports.

This news shouldn't come as a surprise, considering the 23-year-old has yet to make his NHL debut. Last season in the AHL, Cornel produced 22 points in 76 games. He should have some options on the open market, but won't be fantasy relevant for next campaign.

  • Sabres' Eric Cornel: Inks entry-level deal

Cornel signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Sabres on Friday.

Cornel lit up the OHL this season, tallying 83 points over 68 games. The 2014 second-round pick will turn 20 years old in two weeks, and will likely join AHL Rochester. Offensively, he's considered a late bloomer and only tore up the OHL in his overage year. Realistically, he's a minor league depth forward at the moment and won't be competing for a roster spot for the Sabres for a few more years.

  • Sabres' Eric Cornel: Slowly finding offensive game for OHL Peterborough

Cornel had a hat trick in OHL Peterborough's 4-2 win over Oshawa on Friday night.

Cornel was known as more of a two-way, hardworking forward when the Sabres nabbed him with the 44th overall pick in 2014, but his offensive game is slowly coming around. He now has 27 points in 26 games for Peterborough this year and he is also serving as team captain for the Petes.
