  • Niklas Treutle: Returning to European hockey

Treutle signed with KooKoo of Finland's Liiga on Tuesday, TSN reports.

Treutle went undrafted, but played extensively in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga of Germany before sampling North American hockey within the Coyotes organization in 2015-16. He made his NHL debut last February following injuries to Mike Smith and Anders Lindback, but the Ducks terrorized him to the tune of five goals on 15 shots in his first and only start in early March. Arizona severely lacked depth in goal last season, and the loss of Treutle doesn't help matters; however, Adin Hill is developing in juniors as the organization's apparent goalie of the future.

  • Coyotes' Niklas Treutle: Sent back to minors

Treutle was returned to AHL Springfield on Saturday, Chris Morgan of Arizona Sports reports.

This past Thursday, Treutle was cooked like a Thanksgiving turkey in his first NHL start, as a white-hot Ducks team put the puck behind him five times on 16 shots. It's unfair to judge the 24-year-old squarely on that performance, but it's worth noting that even his AHL numbers could stand to be improved. In 26 games with the Falcons, the German has gone 9-11-5 with a 2.91 GAA and .909 save percentage. It's great that he's already getting action in the NHL, but this is a guy who has his work cut out for him if he wants to land a stable role with the parent club next season.

  • Coyotes' Niklas Treutle: Struggles in first NHL start

Treutle allowed five goals on 16 shots prior to being pulled in what would turn out to be a 5-1 loss to the Ducks on Thursday.

A red-hot Ducks club was certainly not an ideal team for the 24-year-old to face in his first start here in the NHL. He was very shaky in the two periods that he played on Thursday, and will likely not see much more action here soon. It may be best to steer very wide of Treutle in the event he starts anytime soon since he will likely need some time to get his head back into the game after this shaky outing.

  • Coyotes' Niklas Treutle: Set for first NHL start

Treutle will start his first NHL game Thursday against the Ducks.

Treutle saw a little action Feb. 21 in relief of Louis Domingue, but Thursday represents the first time he will lead an NHL club onto the ice. The 24-year-old netminder compiled just a 2.91 GAA and .909 save percentage over 26 games with the AHL club, so it may be best to temper expectations for him out of the gate. The opposition (Florida) also averages 2.60 goals per game on the road this season (ranking 10th), and added some forward depth prior to the trade deadline, so it may be best to avoid him the first time out.

  • Coyotes' Niklas Treutle: Sees action in relief of Domingue Saturday

Treutle stopped all four shots he faced in relief of Louis Domingue Saturday against the Blues.

It was the first NHL appearance for Treutle, who was barely tested. The 24-year-old was recalled from AHL Springfield on Tuesday with both Mike Smith and Anders Lindback nursing injuries. If Domingue turns in another poor outing, Treutle could get his opportunity to show what he can do at the NHL level.

  • Coyotes' Niklas Treutle: Recalled to NHL

Treutle was recalled from AHL Springfield on Tuesday.

The Coyotes found themselves in need of an extra goalie with both Mike Smith and Anders Lindback nursing injuries, so Treutle will be called upon for his first career NHL stint. With the injury to Lindback apparently believed to be fairly serious, the 24-year-old could end up seeing some game action serving as Louis Domingue's backup.
