A first-half goal from Lionel Messi from the penalty kick spot lifted Argentina to a 1-0 win over Chile on Thursday in World Cup Qualifying. In a match that lacked quality, partially due to the poor conditions of the field at Estadio Monumental, Argentina did just enough, holding off an attack-minding Chile late, including on a potential equalizer that hit the crossbar on an Alexis Sanchez free kick.

Early on, Angel Di Maria was taken down in the box by Jose Fuenzalida, and a penalty kick was awarded. Messi executed it well past former Barcelona teammate Claudio Bravo. Take a look:

With the 1-0 advantage, Argentina pushed for more but never threatened. The team was able to get down the wings from time to time by passing in the final third but was below average, as Bravo had very little to deal with all night.

Looking to salvage a draw, Chile pushed forward in numbers and saw most of the ball in the final half-hour but could not break down the backline. The team had two free kick chances that were nearly penalty kicks, both of which Sanchez missed, with one rocking off the crossbar, leaving Sergio Romero frozen in goal.

With the result, Argentina moves to third in the standings, while Chile is in sixth. If World Cup Qualifying were to end today, Chile would be on the outside looking in when it comes to Russia 2018.
