WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Cody Rhodes beats The Miz, accepts rematch with Seth Rollins

Rhodes and Rollins will rematch after Rhodes won their first meeting at WrestleMania 38

WWE arrived in Detroit for Raw on Monday night still in the process of moving out of WrestleMania season. With that in mind, Raw continued to build new stories as WrestleMania Backlash approaches.

Among the biggest stories of the night, Cody Rhodes wrestled on Raw for the first time in six years when he picked up a win over The Miz. It's what happened after the match that truly mattered, as Seth Rollins laid down a challenge to Rhodes for a rematch of their WrestleMania 38 match.

Cody Rhodes beats The Miz, accepts Seth Rollins rematch

The show opened with Cody Rhodes appearing as a guest on Miz TV ahead of their match later in the night. Miz ran down Rhodes, saying, while Cody was away in AEW, he must have forgotten that Raw is Miz's show. Rhodes responded that he actually respects Miz, but that he could see that Miz was afraid of him. After the interview ended, Miz attempted to blindside Rhodes but was caught and thrown from the ring.

Cody Rhodes def. The Miz via pinfall after hitting Cross Rhodes. Seth Rollins made his way to ringside before the match began and sat at the commentary desk observing the bout. After a fairly lengthy match, Rhodes got the victory by hitting Cross Rhodes to score the pinfall. Rollins initially remained at the commentary table, applauding Rhodes for his victory and smiling. Rollins would eventually enter the ring with a microphone, claiming that Rhodes had the advantage in their match at WrestleMania by way of being a "surprise opponent." Rollins then issued a challenge for a rematch, which Rhodes quickly accepted.

It's still wild that Rhodes is back in WWE and back in a way where a major chunk of Raw is built around him. The match with Miz was good, as expected. But now Rhodes returns to the still-developing feud with Rollins. The right way to handle that would be another Rhodes win, but the WWE way of handling these situations means Rollins likely wins at WrestleMania Backlash and the two settle things inside Hell in a Cell. Either way, business is good for Rhodes in this moment. Grade: B

What else happened on WWE Raw?

• Veer Mahan def. Dominik Mysterio via submission with the cervical clutch. After the match, Mahan locked Mysterio in the hold again until pulled off by WWE officials. He then pushed the officials away to lock in the hold for a third time. Mysterio was then taken from the arena in an ambulance.
• AJ Styles vs. Damian Priest ended in a no contest. The match ended when Priest had kicked Styles off the ring apron and kneeled in the center of the ring where the lights went out aside from a beam of blue light shining on him.
• Ezekiel introduced himself to Tommaso Ciampa, again insisting he was Elias' younger brother. Ciampa was willing to go with the act, though Kevin Owens showed up to object.
• Naomi def. Liv Morgan via pinfall with a roll-up. The finish came as the two women traded rapid pin attempts before Naomi caught Morgan in a tight jackknife pin.
• MVP explained why he turned on Bobby Lashley during "The VIP Lounge." Lashley was in the ring and demanded answers, which brought out MVP and Omos. MVP claimed all credit for Lashley's success and said Lashley saying he didn't "need him" at WrestleMania proved it was time for MVP to turn to the future. Lashley vowed to run through Omos and then go after MVP.
• Austin Theory announced that he would now just be known as Theory. He said Vince McMahon decided Austin "did not suit" him.
• Bianca Belair def. Zelina Vega via pinfall with the K.O.D. in an extremely short match.
• Sonya Deville revealed herself as Belair's next opponent. Deville presented Belair with a contract, which Belair signed saying that she would defend her Raw women's championship against anyone. Deville then faked introducing the opponent before attacking Belair from behind.
• RK-Bro def. Alpha Academy via pinfall when Randy Orton hit Chad Gable with an RKO.
• The Usos def. The Street Profits via pinfall when Jimmy Uso pinned Montez Ford after the 1D. The Usos confronted RK-Bro, following up on Roman Reigns' instructions that they needed to unify their SmackDown tag titles with RK-Bro's Raw belts. This brought out The Street Profits, who claimed they deserved the title shot. Riddle and Orton then suggested the two teams just go ahead and fight to end the show. The Usos closed the show with a superkick on Orton before posing with both sets of tag titles.
