Caleb Foster goes off for Duke
Second-year Duke coach Jon Scheyer may have a good problem on his hands with Foster, who has started his career coming off the bench while fellow freshman guard Jared McCain holds down a spot as the only new starter in the Blue Devils' lineup. Foster chipped in 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range in a season-opening win over Dartmouth and showed Tuesday night he is also ready to produce against big-time opposition.
McCain has illustrated flashes of brilliance, too, but had his worst game yet against Michigan State, going scoreless on 0 of 5 from the floor. If Scheyer wants to install more shooting into his starting lineup, Foster is clearly an option. He ranked as the No. 23 overall prospect in the Class of 2023, according to 247Sports and was regarded as a five-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite. But within Duke's No. 2 ranked recruiting class, he was actually the fourth highest-ranked prospect.
But he's quickly emerging as a reliable offensive threat. At 6-foot-5, he has the size to elevate for shots that Duke's other, smaller guards like Jeremy Roach, McCain and Jaylen Blakes can't take. Sliding McCain, who is an excellent passer, to the bench could provide the Blue Devils an offensive orchestrator within the team's second unit. Of course, Duke had success last season using 3-point marksman Dariq Whitehead off the bench, and if that's the role Scheyer envisions for Foster, then he's off to a great start.
