North Carolina fans traveled from near and far to watch their Tar Heels win the 2017 national championship on Monday night in Glendale, Arizona. But perhaps the most famous Tar Heel of them all, Michael Jordan, was a surprising no-show. Jordan had an epic tweet after the title game poking fun at himself with a classic ‘Ceiling is the roof’ reference, but it doesn’t explain why he’d miss the biggest game of the entire season.

So, uh, where was he? He didn’t skip the whole game preparing his Twitter gameplan for after the game, did he?

As it turns out, M.J. might be a bit superstitious. He was on hand last season to watch UNC in the championship -- a game it lost at the buzzer to Villanova. And as Roy Williams speculated with USA Today, he and M.J. share a similar trait.

“He’s superstitious like I am,’’ Williams said. “He came last year, and we lost.”

Williams was on the Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday and he clarified that theory.

“People asked me the last day and a half if he was going to come. I said ‘he hasn’t called but guys, knowing him, he’ll say that he went last year and we lost.’ So that’s what I was thinking. Our assistant AD and I were walking to the bus last night and I said ‘I want to bet you a dollar, I’ll give you any odds you want, I bet there’s a text message from Michael or a voicemail from Michael and he’s going to say something about coming last year.’ And sure enough, I got on the bus and got my phone. I had quite a few messages and one of them was from Michael, so I collected some money last night.”

So that doesn’t answer our question about Jordan’s whereabouts, but now we know a little more about M.J. and his superstitious beliefs. With UNC winning the title without him on site, that might just further his superstitions. At least he had good cell service to tweet from wherever he was.
