UCLA vs. Ohio State score, takeaways: Buckeyes heat up after slow start to top Bruins in CBS Sports Classic

Ohio State held off a late surge in the final moments by UCLA to outlast the Bruins 67-60 in the first game of the CBS Sports Classic in Atlanta on Saturday. The Buckeyes (9-2) scored only 22 points in the first half — their fewest of the season — and won despite struggling to hit shots from beyond the arc.

The Buckeyes have won three of the past four CBS Sports Classic meetings vs. the Bruins. Ohio State moved to 7-6 all-time against its future Big Ten foe in large part due to a big second half by star guard Bruce Thornton, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the final 20 minutes of action.

The loss to Ohio State marked the fourth defeat UCLA (5-4) has suffered its last six games. The Bruins are in the midst of a massive rebuilding effort after losing their top five scorers from a team that reached the Sweet 16 last spring.

Ohio State came into the weekend on a hot streak and has won eight of its last nine contests. The Buckeyes were coming off an overtime loss to Penn State in which they squandered an 18-point second-half lead in the second game of Big Ten play.

  • Ohio State guard Roddy Gayle Jr. scored a game-high 19 points, marking his ninth double-digit scoring performance of the season.
  • The Buckeyes were held without a 3-pointer until Jamison Battle knocked down a shot from beyond the arc in the final minute. Ohio State was in danger of recording its first win without a 3-pointer since 2002. Ohio State as a team finished 1-of-15 from deep.
  • UCLA star freshman Sebastian Mack continued his hot start to the season by scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds and Adem Bona scored 11 of his 12 points in the second half.

Ohio State can contend in the Big Ten

The Buckeyes were tabbed to finish eighth in our CBS Sports Big Ten Expert Picks and have certainly exceeded expectations through the first seven weeks of the season. The schedule hasn't been battle tested of what the Buckeyes will experience once they hit the thick of Big Ten play, but Saturday showed they can win a game after struggling early against a quality opponent.

Ohio State scored a season-low 22 points in the first half and failed to hit a 3-pointer until the final minute of the game to put the Bruins away. This Ohio State team is going to be paced by guard play and the Buckeyes will go as far as Roddy Gayle Jr. and Bruce Thornton will take them. Still, this weekend showed Ohio State can win in many ways — including in ugly fashion.

UCLA's rebuild might take longer than expected

When you lose veterans such as Jaime Jaquez Jr., Tyger Campbell, David Singleton and Jaylen Clark, it's never going to be an easy transition. This UCLA team thrived off veteran leadership and it's a major reason why they made it past the first weekend in March Madness the last three seasons. This season, UCLA added eight newcomers to its roster and three of the five starters who played on Saturday weren't on the roster during the 2022-23 season.

Cronin is one of the best coaches in the country, but this would be a tricky assignment for anybody. UCLA has certainly showed flashes of why they can still be a Pac-12 contender this season — specifically what they showed against Marquette in the Maui Invitational last month. Freshman guard Sebastian Mack has been one of the top newcomers in America and Adem Bona proves to show why he's one of the best two-way players in the conference. This weekend showed that the Bruins still have a long way to go if they want to make it back to the NCAA Tournament.

Bona picks up his fourth foul

Late 2H: Ohio State 53, UCLA 50

Adem Bona has been huge for UCLA in the second half, scoring 10 of his 11 points during the first 16 minutes of the period. Bona just picked up his fourth foul with 4:20 left and Mick Cronin is going with Aday Mara to replace him in the middle. After a slow start to the game, Ohio State star Bruce Thornton has scored 11 of his 13 points in the same stretch.

Scoring picking up

MID 2H: Ohio State 48, UCLA 47

After both Ohio State and UCLA struggled to score points in the first half, the latest four minutes stretch included both teams trading buckets. Adem Bona has been the hot hand for UCLA in the second half and scored on three different possessions. Ohio State star Bruce Thornton scored only his third field goal of the game to give the Buckeyes the lead back. Bona and Thornton each have nine points.

McClendon knocks down first shot from beyond the arc

Early 2H: UCLA 38, Ohio State 37

We finally have a shot from distance. UCLA guard Will McClendon knocked down the first three-pointer of the afternoon with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation. The first 17 shots combined from beyond the arc were missed before McClendon ended the drought. UCLA center Adem Bona is checking back in with three fouls and it will be crucial he doesn't pick up his fourth.

Adem Bona to the bench

Early 2H: UCLA 31, Ohio State 29

UCLA star freshman Sebastian Mack opened the second half scoring for the Bruins by knocking down a pair of shots on consecutive possessions to become the first player on the day to reach double figures in the scoring department. Something to keep an eye on is UCLA starting Adem Bona picking up his third foul at the 17:14 mark of the second half. He's a critical two-way player for the Bruins and Mick Cronin elected to sub in Brandon Williams to play next to Aday Mara in his absence.

UCLA leads at halftime

Halftime: UCLA 23, Ohio State 22

We have reached halftime in Atlanta and the first 20 minutes of action have certainly been interesting. The first half featured Ohio State scoring a season-low 22 points, 14 combined turnovers and zero three-pointers made on 13 total attempts from both teams.

Ohio State guard Roddy Gayle Jr. scored a game-high eight points in the first half, while star guard Bruce Thornton scored his first point on a free throw in the final minutes. UCLA star freshman Sebastian Mack scored a team-high six points in 18 minutes. The Bruins have done a good job limiting the Buckeyes explosive offense and will have to do more of the same to pull off the upset.

UCLA takes first lead of the game

Late 1H: UCLA 19, Ohio State 16

UCLA just took its first lead of the afternoon after a put back shot by Brandon Williams. Ohio State had led the first 15 minutes of the game before that made bucket. It's been a rough start for Ohio State star Bruce Thornton, who is 0-of-5 from the floor in 13 minutes. Ohio State as a team has turned the ball over eight times, while UCLA has only turned it over three times.

Scoring drought

MID 1H: Ohio State 12, UCLA 10

Points appear to be at a premium through the first 12 minutes of action. UCLA had a scoring drought of over three minutes before Jan Vide broke the dry spell right before the media timeout with a bucket. Both teams have yet to hit a shot from beyond the arc and UCLA/Ohio State are a combined 0-of-8 from distance. Roddy Gayle Jr. has scored eight of Ohio State's 12 points.

UCLA going to the bench

Early 1H: Ohio State 8, UCLA 6

UCLA freshman Aday Mara is checking out of the game after struggling in six minutes of action. Mara missed all three of his shot attempts and the Bruins elected to go with a smaller lineup with Adem Bona anchoring the middle. UCLA has one of the top defensive units in the country and coach Mick Cronin might go with a smaller lineup like this the rest of the way if Mara continues to struggle on the offensive end of the floor. UCLA and Ohio State have combined to shoot 7-of-20 from the floor during the eight minutes of action.

Ohio State opens the scoring early

Early 1H: Ohio State 6, UCLA 4

We are underway from Atlanta and the Buckeyes are off to a hot start. Ohio State opened the scoring with a pair of buckets from Roddy Gayle Jr. and a powerful dunk from Felix Okpara. UCLA star freshman Sebastian Mack scored the first bucket for UCLA and Dylan Andrews hit a jumper moments later.

UCLA's inexperience

UCLA coach Mick Cronin found himself in unfamiliar territory heading into the 2023-24 season. The Bruins saw key veterans such as Jaime Jaquez Jr., Tyger Campbell, David Singleton and Jaylen Clark depart the program and new faces were for forced to step in. One of those bright spots has been the play of freshman guard Sebastian Mack, who is averaging a team-leading 13.6 points and 1.8 steals per game. UCLA center Adem Bona has also been a key force inside and he should be a big factor Saturday if the Bruins want to pull the upset.

UCLA vs. Ohio State prediction, pick

UCLA is an inexperienced team with players from all over the world, and fifth-year coach Mick Cronin is still figuring out how to extract something close to its full potential. Ohio State is an older group that should know how to respond properly from the frustration of last week's overtime loss at Penn State. Look for the Buckeyes to win by a couple of possessions against a group of Bruins that has yet to show they can close the deal against a good opponent. Prediction: Ohio State -2.5

Ohio State's hot streak

Prior to Ohio State's overtime loss to Penn State last weekend, the Buckeyes were on a hot streak. Ohio State had won seven consecutive games dating back to a loss suffered against Texas A&M in the second game of the 2023-24 season, before blowing an 18-point advantage to the Nittany Lions. Ohio State guard Bruce Thornton has been fantastic for the Buckeyes this season and is averaging a team-leading 18.5 PPG.
